In the summer of 1992, Penny Marshall introduced the world to Dottie Hinson, her kid sister Kit, and the rest of the Rockford Peaches in instant classic, A League of Their Own. Well, fans of one of the great sports movies of our time will soon to get to relive the magic of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League when the A League of Their Own TV show on Amazon makes its debut at some point in the not-so-distant future.

Is this the first you are hearing of the upcoming Amazon series based on a movie that itself was a fictionalized account of the real-life story of the AAGPBL and its impact on America’s pastime during World War II? Fret not, because we have all kinds of info on the all-star cast, who’s running things, and just what we can expect to see from Amazon’s version of A League of Their Own.

Abbi Jacobson on Broad City; Nick Offerman on Parks & Recreation; D'Arcy Carden on The Good Place

Abbi Jacobson, Nick Offerman And D’Arcy Carden Lead The A League Of Their Own Cast

When A League of Their Own debuts on Amazon, we will be seeing the Rockford Peaches, but don’t expect to see Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty, or Rosie O’Donnell take the field, or see Tom Hanks sleeping in the dugout, because there is a new cast of actors bringing new characters to the plate. Starting off, The Mitchells vs. the Machines and Broad City star Abbi Jacobson will be taking on the role of Carson Shaw, a small, farm-town catcher headed to Chicago to chase her dreams. D’Arcy Carden, of The Good Place, will be playing Greta, a first basewoman whose flash on the field is only matched by her off-the-field activities.

The legendary Nick Offerman, of Parks & Recreation and the list of best mustaches of all time, will be portraying Casey “Dove” Porter, a former pitcher whose nickname came about after he killed a dove with his signature forkball and now coaches the Rockford Peaches. Chanté Adams (Bad Hair), Gbemisola Ikumelo (Sex Eduction), Kelly McCormack (Letterkenny), Roberta Colindrez (Mrs. America), Priscilla Delgado (Julieta), and Melanie Field (You) also make up the cast of Amazon’s A League of Their Own.

Amazon’s A League Of Their Own Is More A Reimagining Than A Remake Of Penny Marshall’s Beloved Classic

The upcoming Amazon original series and the movie on which it is based have a lot in common, but the TV show will be more of a reimagining than a traditional remake. When Amazon Studios first announced the project was given the greenlight to enter production back in August 2020, it was revealed that the series will evoke the spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic, but instead of focusing on just one team, A League of Their Own will tell the story of an entire generation of female professional baseball players and will focus on race, sexuality, and other issues affecting the players both on and off the field.

A League Of Their Own Was Co-Created By Abbi Jacobson And Will Graham

In addition to having one of the lead roles in A League of Their Own, Abbi Jacobson also co-created the upcoming Amazon series alongside Will Graham, who previously served as a writer on Amazon originals Mozart in the Jungle and Alpha House. The pair first approached Sony Pictures Television in 2017 with the idea of telling a new set of stories set within the world of Penny Marshall’s movie, and touched on that in a statement (via Deadline) when the show was formally greenlit in 2020:

Three years ago, we approached Sony with the idea of telling a new, still overlooked set of those stories. With the help of an enormously talented team of collaborators, an amazing cast, and the devoted support of Amazon to this project, we feel beyond lucky and excited to get to bring these characters to life. It took grit, fire, authenticity, wild imagination and a crackling sense of humor for these players to achieve their dreams. We’re hoping to bring audiences a story with all of those qualities.

The pair will co-write the series and serve as executive producers alongside Hailey Wierengo of Amazon’s Field Trip Productions and Jamie Babbit.

A League Of Their Own Will Have One-Hour Episodes But A Total Count Has Not Yet Been Revealed

When Amazon announced the series, it was revealed that A League of Their Own will have one-hour episodes, though an exact episode count has yet to be revealed (and most likely won’t be revealed until after production wraps). And, while we don’t yet know how many episodes will make up A League of Their Own, we can use other Amazon series as way to speculate. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has seasons ranging from eight to 10 episodes, and Mozart in the Jungle had 10 episodes in each of its four seasons, which means we’ll probably see something similar when the Rockford Peaches take to the baseball diamond.

The Pilot Episode Of A League Of Their Own Was Directed By Jamie Babbit

The pilot episode of A League of Their Own, which was filmed at some point within the past couple of years, was helmed by Jamie Babbit, who has directed episodes of some of the best television shows in recent memory. Over the years, Babbit has sat it the director’s chair for 18 episodes of Gilmore Girls, four episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, three episodes of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, two episodes of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and a chunk of Russian Doll, to name only a few.

The directors of all remaining episodes of A League of Their Own have not yet been revealed by Amazon.

Production On A League Of Their Own Is Scheduled To Wrap In October 2021

Production on A League of Their Own, which was set to officially get underway in and around the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania metropolitan area in mid-July 2021, will wrap at some point in October 2021. According to Pittsburgh Magazine, portions of the Steel City were transformed to make them look like something out the 1940s (including discounted grocery prices). We should know more about A League of Their Own’s release date and episode count, when cameras stop rolling later, in fall 2021.

While we wait to find out more about A League of Their Own, there are quite a few new and returning Amazon originals on the 2021 fall TV schedule to hold you over in the meantime. And, don’t forget to check out our list of the best movies on Amazon Prime.

Philip grew up in Louisiana (not New Orleans) before moving to St. Louis after graduating from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. When he's not writing about movies or television, Philip can be found being chased by his three kids, telling his dogs to stop barking at the mailman, or chatting about professional wrestling to his wife. Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time.
