Mayim Bialik is probably most recognizable by this point in her career for her years playing Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory, but now the actress is tackling a job that requires a very different set of skills than what she developed in her sitcom work. Bialik is the latest celebrity to start a guest-hosting stint on Jeopardy. While Jeopardy fans have had a lot to say about the hosting situation since longtime host Alex Trebek passed away in late 2020, Bialik has already proven that she's her own critic when it comes to the game show.
Following her debut as Jeopardy guest host, Mayim Bialik – who is an author and neuroscientist on top of her acting work – took to Twitter to share her reaction to her own performance behind the podium on Jeopardy. She shared on May 31:
I was on Jeopardy tonight and I never watch myself but I did. I watched myself and had all sorts of criticisms. My kids were like, ‘What’s with your voice?’ And first of all, that was me trying to put on my best Jeopardy voice. I was trying to sound friendly and cerebral. But also I did those Jeopardy episodes right after I wrapped Call Me Kat and that is what vocal burnout sounds like…. Anyway, my kids didn’t tease me too badly. I liked my blazer. I wished my waist was smaller. [laughs] But I was pretty happy. It was so surreal. It was very surreal to see myself there. I don’t know if I’ll get to watch every night but I’d say it’s the only thing that I’ve ever enjoyed watching myself in, mostly because I’m barely on camera. [laughs]
Naturally, the TV star who got her big break with Blossom, became a fan-favorite after coming into The Big Bang Theory a few seasons late, and has kept on delivering the laughs as star of Fox's Call Me Kat found humor in her hosting debut. Mayim Bialik was clear that she's a pretty harsh critic when it comes to her own work – which is perhaps why she never watches herself – but also had some good things to say. She liked her blazer, and she had a good time!
Her comments also clear up what was happening with her voice, in case any fans were concerned that she sounded different than on Call Me Kat or The Big Bang Theory. Jumping right into guest-hosting Jeopardy after finishing the first season of Call Me Kat resulted in some vocal burnout, but not so much that it interfered with her ability to do the top job on the game show. Besides, it's a situation that Mayim Bialik might need to get used to, even if she doesn't become the full-time host of Jeopardy. Call Me Kat has been renewed for a second season at Fox.
Thanks to Mayim Bialik's status as both a real-life scientist and a beloved actor on a show like The Big Bang Theory, she was a natural selection to take over the hosting duties for a bit while Jeopardy is sticking with guest hosts. At the very least, the announcement that she would be on board was a little less surprising than football player Aaron Rodgers, who rose to the challenge in his own way. Jeopardy fans campaigning for LeVar Burton to land the job were rewarded with the announcement that he too would be a guest host. The ratings for the guest hosts haven't all been stellar, but Bialik being happy with her debut is good to see.
Mayim Bialik won't be host of Jeopardy forever, and the Season 1 finale of Call Me Kat actually aired way back in March, but you can find all twelve seasons of The Big Bang Theory streaming on HBO Max now.
