Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist Season 3 On Peacock? Here’s What The Showrunner Thinks

With the Season 2 finale of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist airing very soon, the fate of the show has yet to be announced. NBC has made a slew of renewals and cancellations recently, as well as announced it fall schedule, yet the network has not announced decisions on still-airing bubble shows Zoey’s, Manifest, Good Girls and freshman series Debris. Although it’s hard to tell what will happen to the musical dramedy, showrunner Austin Winsberg reveals there have been discussions of another possibility for the series, and it involves Peacock.

In the age of streaming, many shows are being saved by the likes of Netflix and more, while some networks are opting to move some of their shows to their respective streaming platforms, thinking they’d be a better fit there. NBCUniversal has moved shows from the main network to streaming service Peacock before, with comedy A.P. Bio and, now, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist showrunner Austin Winsberg tells TVLine that nothing is off the table when it comes to Zoey’s future, whether that’d be on NBC or on Peacock:

I know that that has been one of the discussions on the table, but I’ve heard nothing concrete. . . . If we had the ability to not be so beholden to the network runtime, I mean, there are scenes I have to cut every week or songs I have to cut for time. To able to have a little bit more creative freedom and flexibility there could be great.

Shows moving to streaming have proven to do better, especially since they’re typically given more freedom and fewer restrictions creatively. A show like Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist could do fairly well on Peacock, given how much they have to fit in so little time. And as Austin Winsberg mentioned, with some of the songs or scenes that are cut every week, this could give writers more room to have bigger and better numbers, with no concern of any of the sequences being cut from the final episode.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist isn’t the only show being considered moving to streaming. Over on CBS, military drama SEAL Team and freshman series Clarice are reportedly moving to Paramount+, though nothing has been confirmed. If Zoey’s does move to Peacock, it’ll give NBC more room on their midseason schedule, while also keeping fans of the musical dramedy satisfied. Even though it may not be ideal for some fans who would rather not pay for the service, the series being renewed and staying on NBC isn’t off the table, either.

While it’s unknown when a decision about Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist will be made, especially with the finale airing soon, you can keep updated with our growing list of cancellations and renewals and find out which other shows are still waiting on announcements.

The season finale of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist airs May 16 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC and previous episodes are currently streaming on Peacock.
