How Legends Of Tomorrow's Adam Tsekhman Justified Gary's Wild Twist In His Own Head

Adam Tsekhman as Gary Green on DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Spoilers ahead for the first two episodes of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 6, ”Ground Control to Sara Lance” and “Meat: The Legends."

Season 6 of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has been off to a crazy start already (obviously), and with this being Legends, literally anything can happen at any point, to anyone. In the season premiere, a major twist occurred when the beloved character Gary Green, previously thought to be human, was revealed to be keeping the secret that he's actually an alien! Adam Tsekhman, who portrays the adorkable Legend and Ava’s right-hand man, had to come to his own sense of justification for Gary’s wild twist.

Caity Lotz's Sara, onboard the alien spaceship after getting abducted, found out that the alien responsible for capturing her was actually Gary. Meanwhile, on the ground, the Legends found a pair of Gary’s glasses that he uses to turn into his Earthly form. Adam Tsekhman told Collider his thoughts about the big twist, and why some of the more oddball things that Gary has done and said in previous seasons now make a little more sense. In his words:

I thought it was hilarious, first of all. And then I started to think about like, 'Okay, well, let's figure out the justification for this. Like, what happened?' And then it did become that there were a lot of things that Gary did in earlier seasons that are like, 'Yeah, how does an adult male not know that?'

As an example Adam Tsekhman brought up the hard-to-forget Season 4 premiere, “The Virgin Gary,” which is a Legends of Tomorrow episode true to its bonkers nature. Not only did it feature Gary serving as unicorn bait, which also makes for some very memorable moments, but it also showed Gary questioning the status of his virginity, which is something that most human beings are well aware of. And that instance for his character reminded Tsekhman that although moments like that are subtle, Gary's alien nature makes one want to go back and see if there were any other clues that could have pointed at Gary’s humanity being not so humane. Here's how the actor put it:

You know, for example, I don't know if you remember the episode, but the unicorn nipple episode. He asks Constantine, 'Are you sure I'm a virgin? Because like, that thing we did?' Someone of his age and living in the world doesn't even understand what a virgin is — I was like, 'Okay, maybe that does make sense, actually. How does he not understand what a virgin is?' So I started thinking about moments like that. 'Okay, yeah. That makes sense. That makes sense.' And of course, even now there are a lot of questions. Like, 'Why did the alien human form look like Gary?' You know, maybe we'll get those answers, too. I don't know.

In Episode 602, Sara and Gary teamed up after being stranded on a distant planet when their ship crashed, and they ran into the world-renowned, and notoriously missing, pilot Amelia Earhart, who turned out to also be an alien. While there’s no telling how long Sara and Gary will be on their own, especially now that they’re trying to escape from Gary’s ex-fiancée, it will be interesting to see how he will work with Sara and the Legends once they all reunite, now that they know about his intergalactic secret. But just whose side is he on?

New episodes of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow air Sundays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
