A big chunk of the story in this debut season of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is structured around The Blip, the time in the MCU when half the world’s population disappeared because Thanos the Mad Titan (Josh Brolin) succeeded in his maniacal quest at the conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War. Half our population was gone for five whole years, and the Flag Smashers, led by Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman), are fighting to get back to the way things were before everyone returned, believing it to have been better.
We have learned about people who “blipped” away following the Snap, including Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) from WandaVision and both Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). But what about new Captain America John Walker (Wyatt Russell)? Was he gone during The Blip? We asked him, and his funny answer is above.
It’s a legitimate question, and one that Wyatt Russell apparently was wondering about, himself. Disappearing during the Blip could have had extreme impacts on a person’s psyche. They could be wracked with guilt over the life events that they missed out on while gone -- Monica returned to a hospital bed, for example, only to learn that her mother Maria (Lashana Lynch) had died several years earlier. Did John Walker miss out on something significant, possibly leading to his imbalanced state?
My guess is no. Walker, as we have learned from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is a decorated soldier who has been active in duty, and I’m guessing the medals he’s earned came from the last five years. If he was missing following The Snap, I think it would have been mentioned in the first four episodes of this program. When Wyatt Russell asked Marvel this very question, the powers that be danced around his inquiry. The actor told CinemaBlend:
I don’t know! It’s a good question, but I have no idea. You’d have to ask Zoie (Nagelhout) or one of the producers. Every time I asked questions like that, it was like, ‘Don’t ask too many questions, Wyatt. You’re just going to get more confused.’ And I was like, ‘Alright!’
Wyatt Russell had other issues to worry about, like the fact that his character, the new Captain America, was about to snap while the whole world was watching him. Not “The Snap.” A psychological break brought on by the murder of his partner, Lemar Hoskins (Cle Bennett), during a battle with the serum-enhanced Karli.
We will have to wait for the next episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to see the implications of John Walker’s rage, but with only two episodes left in the series, I’m willing to bet that shield he was handed will be in someone else’s hands before too long.
