The Only Way A Rick And Morty And Solar Opposites Crossover Could Happen, According To The Co-Creators

Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites

Season 2 of Solar Opposites is currently out on Hulu and, while it is hilarious, anyone hoping for clues for a Rick and Morty crossover will be sadly disappointed. I did get a chance to speak to co-creators Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan about the possibility and got some insight into the only way in which such a crossover would happen.

McMahan spoke about a Solar Opposites and Rick and Morty crossover and told me that a crossover could indeed happen--though right now that doesn't seem to be where anyone's head is at. In fact, he also discussed the risks of such a venture and explained what would first need to happen if it could ever be considered a possibility:

But honestly, I’ll tell you right up front, it isn’t a big headline for us to cross them over. Justin is literally working on both those shows every day. Keeping them separate is a lot of work to make sure that you’re getting two fully realized shows. When you start to wonder about the crossover, it’s going to take a lot of work. I think any crossover possibility with Rick and Morty down the line. . .let’s let Solar [Opposites] get to where Rick and Morty is. Where it really knows what it is and it’s firing on all cylinders. Then we’ll talk about that stuff. Because I think like, for me, keeping them separate is part of the game, is part of what’s fun.

According to Mike McMahan, the only way things could ideally come together is if Solar Opposites had another season or two under its belt to further develop its own identity before crossing over with the mega-popular Rick and Morty. I also completely understand the sentiment, especially after crossovers with other shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons weren't as amazing as what some (but not all) imagined they'd be. Don't get your excitement level up to much, though, as he also mentioned right now it would be like "jumping the shark."

Crossing them over would, it’s almost like jumping the shark. The thing that an audience might want, when they finally get it, it’ll never be as satisfying as what the possibility may be.

Of course, a crossover between Solar Opposites and Rick and Morty is more of a pipe dream than anything anyway. Both Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan have talked in the past on how the issue isn't necessarily with the want to do a crossover, but it is being contingent on two megacorporations coming together and allowing it to happen. Justin Roiland pointed out that while similar projects made crossovers like that happen in the past, the era for that may be over:

Did you ever read that article where they say Who Framed Roger Rabbit could never happen again? In reference to all those characters being in one [movie]...It’s a very different time you’re not going to get those characters.

So, for now, there don't seem to be any immediate plans or a desire to cross over Solar Opposites and Rick and Morty. While that news may be disappointing for fans, it does seem that Mike McMahan and Justin Roiland both agree it's for the best for now and that Solar Opposites could use more time to develop and become its own thing. Like, maybe let's let Korvo have a mob storyline instead of having it interrupted by rabid wolves.

Solar Opposites Seasons 1 and 2 are available to binge right now on Hulu. Be sure to read more about the upcoming season here on CinemaBlend, including some very encouraging words from both creators about how hilarious the upcoming Christmas special will be.
