Doctor Who's Mandip Gill Weighs In On Whether The Doctor And Yaz Will Ever Get Together

Yaz The Doctor Doctor Who BBC America

After Doctor Who said goodbye to two of the three companions that made their debut alongside Jodie Whittaker's incarnation of The Doctor, some have wondered what's in store for the remaining one (though the series will introduce another) Yaz. The character, played by actress Mandip Gill, had given the fans the impression she had deep, potentially romantic feelings for The Doctor. However, does that mean the two characters will ever get together?

Mandip Gill recently confirmed she's aware of the fandom who have shipped Yaz and The Doctor over the course of their run on Doctor Who together, but told Metro it wasn't something she had caught on to immediately. She also talked about the possibility of the two characters sharing some sort of romance, and how that could happen on the series.

I’m aware of it now, but at the time I was filming it it was never a thing... It must just have been natural chemistry between Jodie and myself. After it came out I was like, 'Wow I didn’t even think that was a thing.' I didn’t think it was a thing until I saw people mentioning it online... I think it is just a natural thing that can happen between friends or who knows where it’s gonna go?

Like many Doctor Who fans would expect, Mandip Gill wouldn't outright say whether fans were on the money with Yaz confessing some romantic feelings for The Doctor in Season 13 or beyond. Secrets like that tend to stay quiet until the series can reveal them, and even then, things tend to get a bit complicated when it comes to The Doctor and love.

The Doctor certainly has shown romantic interest in companions in the rebooted era of Doctor Who, so it's not crazy to believe this storyline could unfold with this incarnation. For example, fans know The Doctor had a romantic interest in Rose Tyler, and that version of The Doctor ultimately created a clone to live with her in a parallel world. After that, he had a somewhat romantic flirtation with Amy Pond, though she ultimately married her fiancé Rory and they gave birth to The Doctor's future wife, River Song.

While The Doctor was married to River in a complicated "timey-wimey" way, there's an ongoing debate in the Doctor Who fandom regarding whether he had romantic feelings for Clara Oswald. As I said before, things have gotten complicated with The Doctor and love, which is to say they could once again complicate further should Jodie Whittaker's Doctor develop romantic feelings for Yaz. Whether that will actually happen in Season 13 or before Whittaker is done with the show, I cannot say, and even Mandip Gill hasn't said one way or the other.

On a less romantic note, those looking to binge Doctor Who in America can do so by streaming the series on HBO Max. The show certainly has had its share of iconic episodes in its long run, and while someone may feel inclined to re-live the entire tale from the first rebooted season, these episodes would be a great place to get a feel for what makes the show so special.
