The Flash's Season 7 Premiere Killed Off Fan-Favorite Character, But There's A Silver Lining

Warning! The following contains spoilers for The Flash Season 7 premiere "All's Well That Ends Wells." Read at your own risk!

The Flash rang in Season 7 with a bang, and Barry is now officially back with speed but at a terrible cost. The season premiere revealed that there was an artificial way for Barry to get his speed back, but it required the sacrifice of Nash Wells. The character's death meant the supposed last Wells alive has died, meaning Tom Cavanagh's recurring character on the Arrowverse series is gone.

And while there is precedent for characters on The Flash returning from the dead, this one seemed to have some finality. The multiversal entities within Nash were vital to powering the artificial Speed Force that Barry and the team have been developing but needed an organic conduit to successfully transfer into the device. Nash initially tried to find a way around it but eventually embraced his fate and disintegrated into nothingness as the transfer completed.

Nash Wells The Flash The CW

Nash Wells, Harry Wells, and even Wells the Gray are gone, so does that mean Tom Cavanagh is gone? It certainly seems like it will be hard for The Flash to incorporate him now that every version of Wells in the multiverse is dead, though there is one other option. The Flash fans may remember Eobard Thawne (Reverse-Flash) is not technically a Wells but uses the face to taunt Barry from time to time in their encounters. There's an opportunity for Cavanagh to return through that avenue, assuming the essence of Thawne (which was expelled from Nash's body in Season 6) can find another host and transform their face.

Plus, if all the multiversal Wells could exist within Nash's mind, then perhaps there's some chance they could be brought back out of the artificial Speed Force should the original Speed Force be restored. Anything is possible on a superhero show, though I do have to say The Flash went pretty heavy on the goodbyes, except in one key regard.

One thing about the exit that did shock me and has me a bit suspicious is the manner in which Tom Cavanagh was seemingly written off The Flash. For an actor who has been a key element to the series since its beginning, there was something strange about his final episode being one where much of the central cast wasn't even present. Cavanagh's only scenes in the episode were with Grant Gustin and then more recent additions to the cast Kayla Compton (Allegra) and Brandon McKnight (Chester). Cavanagh exited in an episode where Danielle Panabaker and Carlos Valdes didn't even appear as Caitlin and Cisco, so we didn't get to see them say goodbye.

Sure enough, anyone who thought that was suspicious may be interested in comments from showrunner Eric Wallace to EW. Tom Cavanagh will remain on the show, even if the Wells won't.

No...Tom Cavanagh is still part of the show. I would just say that we've already seen there's an infinite numbers of Wellses. Just because they're all dead doesn't mean that should change. And Tom Cavanagh has more to do in season 7 — much more to do.

I don't exactly know how, but Tom Cavanagh will continue to be a part of The Flash. My hope is more Reverse-Flash, though I wouldn't be opposed to some other weird way for the actor to showcase his talents. Maybe he's the new living embodiment of the Artificial Speed Force? That would be a trip, but I'm sure The Flash has bigger plans.

If there is any ambiguity with Wells' survival on The Flash, I'm sure the series will mention it in the coming Season 7 episodes airing on The CW Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET. Let us know if you were satisfied with the exit in our poll, and read on for how the series plans on addressing other exits in Season 7 here.
