What Does WandaVision’s Nexus Reference Mean? Here’s What Marvel’s Comics Tell Us

The Nexus Commercial

Naturally, this story gets into spoilers for episode seven of WandaVision. Turn around now if you are not caught up on the series.

The commercials in WandaVision can be interpreted in so many different ways. They are clever breaks in the action that often arrive at a moment when we need to catch our breath. But the messages included in them can often point to significant occurrences in Wanda’s (Elizabeth Olsen) past, or make metaphorical references to her current, grief-stricken situation. Lagos, for instance, is a brand of paper towel to use ‘when you make a mess you didn’t mean to,” a reference to Wanda’s actions in Lagos in Captain America: Civil War. This week, though, the episode seven commercial seemed to make a clear reference that pointed forward to the future direction of the MCU.

The commercial in WandaVision for was Nexus, an antidepressant aimed at people who feel like the world is “going on without you.” The ad says that the medication seeks to “anchor you back to your reality, or the reality of your choice.” This could point to Wanda setting up an alternate reality because she is unhappy with the one that she is living in… one without Vision (Paul Bettany) in it.

But for those audience members who are familiar with the Marvel Comics, the term “Nexus” has a completely different meaning, and it ties into the theory that WandaVision is about to open the door to the multiverse in the MCU.

Officially known as the Nexus of All Realities, the “Nexus” in the comics is a gateway that crosses dimensions and literally provides a pathway that allows individuals to access all possible realities. The Nexus even can grant access to realities that exist in between realities, which can get both mystic and cosmic. You can begin to understand how and why the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), soon will be involved in this story, with Wanda (Olsen) scheduled to appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The origin of the Nexus in Marvel’s mythology is unclear, though the prevailing theories on WandaVision point to the fact that Wanda is going to freak out near the end of this storyline and rip a hole between realities, creating repercussions that will have to be sorted in MCU movies like Doctor Strange 2 and the as-yet-untitled Spider-Man 3.

If this happens, then the fictional town of Westview, New Jersey that has been created inside of a Hex of Wanda’s doing could become the focal point where all of the different realities of every existing multiverse intersect, all because Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) manipulated Wanda into creating a zone where she was safe inside of her grief.

Calling the medication “Nexus” in the WandaVision trailer has to be a direct nod to the fact that the Nexus in Marvel Comics is the intersection of all existing realities in the multiverse… unless it isn’t. Really, all of the references and nods that we think we are finding in WandaVision will make more sense once the entire series has played itself out. For now, we interpret it this way. This all could change after the final two episodes of WandaVision have brought this exciting season to a close.
