Wait, The Mandalorian’s Katee Sackhoff Didn’t Know Luke Skywalker Was In The Season 2 Finale Until It Aired?

Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze on The Mandalorian (2020)

The Mandalorian Season 2 provided fans with a collection of awesome episodes that included some pretty epic moments. This includes the emotional season finale, which featured an appearance from none other than Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker. You can imagine that such a moment was as big a deal for the cast and crew as it was viewers who would later watch it on their screens. But there was plenty of secrecy surrounding the scene, and it now seems that even Katee Sackhoff, who was on set for that sequence, didn’t even know Skywalker was in it until she watched the finale:

I didn't know until I saw it with you guys. I didn't know! They didn't tell us [who it was]. There was an actor there with dots on his face... I mean, [I] kind of [put it together], but at the same time I thought to myself, 'They would've let us know that.'

Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze was one of the Mandalorian characters who was there to witness Luke Skywalker arrive and take Grogu (Baby Yoda) to begin his Jedi training. However, it seems she wasn’t quite sure who the character was at the time. During her interview with the Schmoedown Entertainment Network, Sackhoff pointed out that she had a feeling it might be Skywalker but wasn’t completely sure:

They said, who did they say it was? I think Robin [Chow] knew who they said it was. But it was a complete red herring… So we didn't know. I knew it was a Jedi. I knew it was an X-Wing. So you start to put things together, but you don't know.

As it does with many other massive franchises, secrecy surrounds Star Wars, as the producers take serious measures to ensure that major plot points don’t leak ahead of time. But you have to admit that this is a new level even for Star Wars. Still, with such a major reveal, it’s easy to understand why this approach was taken with the actors. Sackhoff, a fan of the franchise, even seems to have loved the fact that she got to find out when she watched the finale for the first time.

Katee Sackhoff wasn’t the only Mandalorian star to be caught off guard by Luke Skywalker’s inclusion in the finale, either. Gina Carano previously revealed that she didn’t learn about it until she was in the makeup trailer.

Ultimately, Luke Skywalker’s appearance was praised by fans, who then proceeded to shower love on Mark Hamill. Because there was an actor present in place of Hamill on set, one would assume that his performance was done in post-production. Since the episode’s original airing, Hamill has expressed gratitude for having the opportunity to play his beloved character one more time.

The Mandalorian has been renewed for a third season that could very well include Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan. And if she does return, let’s hope Season 3 presents her with fewer confusing moments.

The first two seasons of The Mandalorian are available to stream on Disney+.
