HBO Is Developing Another Game Of Thrones Prequel, And It's One George R.R. Martin Recommended

So far since Game of Thrones ended there has not been a new series set in the same world that has made it to the airways yet. That’s had quite an effect on HBO’s subscriptions; however, the good news is more GOT content set in the world George R.R. Martin created would clearly be popular and is, in fact, on the way. Another new TV series is in the works and this one is based on a project Martin himself recommended.

News broke this week that HBO is developing a Game of Thrones prequel that George R.R. Martin has long thought would be a good fit for TV. Those up on the author’s other works may have already heard of the “Tales of Dunk and Egg,” a novella series that follows Dunk and Egg, aka Ser Duncan the Tall and young Aegon V Targaryen, on three adventures that were later combined into one book: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Variety first broke the news, but this isn’t the first time “Tales of Dunk and Egg” was brought up in the context of possibly becoming a TV show. Back in 2016, George R.R. Martin actually brought the novellas up as a great option for a TV show, calling Dunk and Egg’s adventures “the most natural” follow-up to Game of Thrones itself. Thrones would ultimately wrap in 2019.

There are eight million stories in Westeros… and even more in Essos and the lands beyond. A whole world full of stories, waiting to be told… if indeed HBO is interested. The most natural follow-up would be an adaptation of my Dunk & Egg stories.

This is not to be confused with the upcoming House of The Dragon, the spinoff series that has already been confirmed at the subscription streamer. That spinoff is about the Targaryen clan, well-known from the original series, and will be hitting HBO and HBO Max in 2022. Presumably "Dunk and Egg" will come down the pipeline even later, as reports indicate no writer has been attached yet, though the project is being listed as a "priority" for HBO.

I haven't read the novellas yet personally, though I have enjoyed A Song of Ice and Fire (or what's been published so far), but from what I have gathered, a lot of things that people enjoyed about Arya and The Hound during the original Game of Thrones series can also be enjoyed about the Dunk and Egg relationship, with Egg and Arya having a fair number of similarities.

Still, we'll have to wait and see if this project comes to fruition. One of the reasons we've been waiting so long for a Game of Thrones follow-up revolves around the fact that HBO had another prequel starring Naomi Watts in the works initially that ultimately did not move forward. Then the Targaryen series began moving forward, but it takes some time to film a big budget, high-fantasy series of this ilk. Meanwhile, a separate report from EW also mentions that another prequel that could be based around "Roberts Rebellion" and would feature more familiar characters --such as a younger Ned Stark -- could also be in the works. I'm not sure HBO would be interested in having three of these shows rolling at the same time, but we'll be sure to keep you updated regardless of what happens.

I guess I have to ask, if you could pick, which would you prefer to see? A project based on Dunk and Egg or another project that would bring back some younger versions of Game of Thrones characters we've already met?
