Gwendoline Christie Has Reportedly Landed Her First Big TV Role After Game Of Thrones

Gwendoline Christie in Game of Thrones

Over eight seasons, HBO’s Game of Thrones not only drew in huge ratings but was a springboard for many actors' careers. While Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington have been the most visible post-GoT, other cast members have been somewhat low-key about their work after the fantasy drama's end. But most recently, Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie has reportedly landed her first big television role since the series ended: Netflix's The Sandman.

As first reported by Discussing Film, Gwendoline Christie is rumored to be the second actor cast for the Netflix series. She will reportedly be joining The Hollow Crown’s Tom Sturridge, who will play the leading role of Dream (a.k.a. Morpheus). Currently, her rumored role in the upcoming series is unknown, even though two key roles from Neil Gaiman's source material, Desire and Death, haven't been cast yet. The actor is no stranger to Gaiman’s work as she recently participated in a radio adaptation of his novel The Sleeper and the Spindle.

Wonder Woman co-writer Allan Heinberg will serve as writer and showrunner for The Sandman, which is set for an 11-episode run. Neil Gaiman along with Batman Begins writer David S. Goyer is executive producing the project while co-writing the pilot with Heinberg. The series has recruited His Dark Material’s Jamie Childs and The Handmaid’s Tale’s Mike Barker to direct episodes for the series.

Game of Thrones took Gwendoline Christie’s career to another level as fan-favorite Brienne of Tarth. During the eight-season run, in which she appeared in all but the first season, she earned multiple SAG and Saturn Award nominations with an Emmy nomination for Supporting Actress in a Drama for the show’s final season as well.

Gwendoline Christie’s career didn’t just stop with Game of Thrones. During the series' run, she became part of the Star Wars universe as Captain Phasma in two films of the recent Star Wars trilogy – The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. She even reprised the role in the animated series Star Wars Resistance. After the series ended, she starred in The Personal History of David Copperfield with Dev Patel and Tilda Swinton. Christie will be seen next in the comedy-drama Our Friend with Casey Affleck, Dakota Johnson and Jason Segel.

Despite The Sandman reportedly being her first big post-Game of Thrones television role, Gwendoline Christie appeared in several projects with some more lined up. This latest report that she has been cast in Netflix’s live adaptation of The Sandman should be enough to get fans of Christie as well as the source material excited.

It's nice to see Gwendoline Christie being able to move on from Brienne to get another big television role. Some actors can get typecast for playing one iconic role, but Christie has managed to move forward without any hang-ups. You can check out the actor in Our Friend when it is released on Jan. 22.
