Dexter's Michael C. Hall Knows The Finale Was 'Extremely Dissatisfying,' And Wants To Fix That

Dexter Morgan in Dexter Showtime

Showtime's Dexter is proof that a show can be phenomenal 90% of the way through, but a disappointing finale can impact its legacy. It happened to Game of Thrones, it happened to How I Met Your Mother, and it definitely happened to Showtime's acclaimed serial killer drama. Many Dexter fans were disappointed with how the series ended, and Michael C. Hall wants to fix that.

The actor recently spoke about Dexter's upcoming revival, a limited TV series that has long been discussed. Despite ideas floating around ever since the finale in 2013, the idea for a comeback was only greenlit in late 2020. Star Michael C. Hall talked with The Daily Beast about why the trigger was finally pulled on this long-awaited revival, and why it's happening in general.

Yeah. It’s a conversation that’s been ongoing, and different possibilities have emerged over the years. I think in this case, the story that’s being told is worth telling in a way that other proposals didn’t, and I think enough time has passed where it’s become intriguing in a way that it wasn’t before. And let’s be real: people found the way that show left things pretty unsatisfying, and there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling. I include myself in the group of people that wondered, ‘What the hell happened to that guy?’ So I’m excited to step back into it. I’ve never had that experience of playing a character this many years on.

One reason for the Dexter revival finally happening is the quality of the story that Michael C. Hall and others think will be told, and another is the actor's curiosity in what Dexter Morgan is up to all these years later. Dexter ended with Dexter Morgan faking his own death and moving to Oregon. The series left many loose ends for the character, such as what became of his son Harrison and his lover Hannah in Argentina.

The Dexter finale was panned by audiences who were dissatisfied with Dexter Morgan just taking up a new identity elsewhere. Michael C. Hall shared his thoughts on the finale and what he thought of the negative criticism the show has received over the years.

A criticism that speaks to someone’s experience is warranted. I certainly thought it was justifiable for Dexter to do what he did. I think some of the criticisms were about that, and some of the criticisms weren’t so much about the ‘what’ as they were about the ‘how,’ and those were valid, too. We certainly do live in an era where the bar is very high as far as the simultaneous surprise, satisfaction, and closure that should go along with a series finale.

With the upcoming limited TV series, the Dexter crew will have a chance to give its fans a more satisfying finale, or maybe even a great end to Dexter Morgan's story. It certainly seems like Michael C. Hall and others were in no rush to bring the character back without the right idea considering how long they've waited, but we'll only know for sure if it was worth the wait when it releases.

The Dexter limited TV series is in the works, so be sure to keep an eye out for updates on its development. Also, continue to stick with CinemaBlend for all the latest happening in television and movies.
