The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series finale aired just a few months ago but, for longtime fans, it probably feels like an eternity. Many people, like myself, are still grappling with the fact that Phil Coulson and his team completed their final mission and ultimately, went their separate ways. It was a bittersweet ending but one that was more than fitting for the Marvel show. Still, you still can’t help but feel like there are more stories tell with these characters in spinoffs.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a vast sandbox, but the world and mythology that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has built is quite expansive on its own. This includes a plethora of endearing characters, who were all left in interesting places when the show reached its conclusion. All of them (except FitzSimmons because they’ve been through enough) have plenty of fighting left to do and deserve to headline new shows. So let’s take a look at some potential S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoffs that would be fun to see:
Mack And Yo-Yo Working For The New S.H.I.E.L.D.
Although a number of their colleagues left active S.H.I.E.L.D. duty by the series’ end, Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie and Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez remained with the organization in prominent roles. Yo-Yo is revealed to be one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s top agents and is working alongside Agents Piper and (the LMD-resurrected) Davis. Meanwhile, Mack continued his duties as director, seemingly expanding the organization’s reach in the process.
Mack and Yo-Yo are compelling characters and putting them against the backdrop of this new-look S.H.I.E.L.D. could be interesting. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. covered aspects of their pasts, but a show like this can dive even deeper into their psyches. Their jobs come with serious emotional baggage and how they carry it and simultaneously continue their romance could make for some compelling TV. And of course, this show would also allow us to see how S.H.I.E.L.D. continues to evolve as an entity, which could have continued effects on the MCU as a whole.
The Awesome Adventures Of Deke Shaw: Director Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Deke made a bold choice in the series finale, as he opted to stay in the alternate timeline to help his allies return to their own. While this left Deke further misplaced in time, he did land himself in a new position – director of that timeline’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Through instructing the team on getting back to their timeline, Deke proved himself to the agents of the alternate reality. So they had no problem asking him to be their leader.
It goes without saying that there are plenty of shenanigans that can arise from a Deke Shaw-led S.H.I.E.L.D. As well-meaning as he may be, he does have a tendency to cut corners now and then, which could make things rocky for him and his team. Still, he’s also proven to rise to the occasion when needed, which is what got him into the situation in the first place. In addition, this spinoff – being set in an alternate timeline – wouldn’t be restrained by events of the MCU and could actually take a What If...? kind of approach to its storytelling. Jeff Ward and the producers worked hard to make Deke a likable character, and now he deserves more time to shine.
Melinda May And The Coulson Academy
Yes, Melinda May is now a professor, helping to educate the next generation of agents at S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Coulson Academy. What’s even sweeter about it is that Flint (the young Inhuman from the future) is also one of her pupils. May becoming an educator made a lot of sense, especially when you consider just how cerebral she is. Plus, she’s built up a firm level of patience over seven seasons, which could be invaluable when dealing with a younger crop of agents.
Marvel proved it could more than handle the YA genre with Runaways and Cloak and Dagger, and it could do the same here. Though these agents, aside from Flint, likely won’t have powers or supervillain parents, they’re still young people who are growing up in an extraordinary world. And who better to guide them than May? It’s true that she’s not exactly Ms. Frizzle, but watching her instruct her students and guide them through their problems (both academic and personal) while simultaneously dealing with faculty would be fun.
Quake’s Adventures In Space
When S.H.I.E.L.D. began, Daisy “Quake” Johnson was a lone hacker living in a van and going by the name Skye. By the end of the show, she was a full-fledged superhero with a found family. Coulson, May and the others were her kin for the duration of the show. However, the final season gave her a blood relative in the form of her Inhuman half-sister, Kora – who she brought with her from the alternate timeline – along with a love interest in ‘50s S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Daniel Sousa. Ultimately, the final moments of the series finale revealed that the three were exploring the cosmos in Zephyr Three.
A TV show in which two superpowered sisters and a man out of time travel through space may sound far-fetched, but it could definitely work. The cosmic side of the MCU is vast and could provide a plethora of story opportunities. One can only imagine what kind of planets or cosmic entities the group could come in contact with. Plus, the three actors have great chemistry, and a spinoff could further highlight it. This show could also further Daisy’s development in interesting ways. As mentioned, Daisy had to learn to be part of a family during the events of the S.H.I.E.L.D., and it would be satisfying to watch her become the Coulson-like figure that keeps this new family together.
On The Road With Phil Coulson And Lola
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has given us so much over the years, but we can’t forget that it all started with one man – Phillip J. Coulson. It was his talent for seeking out people with special abilities, and it was that very same knack that landed him his extraordinary team. Coulson may not have been the person he was (both physically and mentally) by the time we arrived at the series finale, but he remained the glue that held everything together. With the fight against the Chronicoms finished, the now-LMD Coulson decided to take a sabbatical and travel the world in a new version of his vintage car, Lola.
At this point, I think most fans would pretty much watch Coulson do almost anything, and travelling the globe and finding adventure is definitely one of those things. Coulson may be taking time off, but the craziness of the MCU is always at work, and he could certainly cross paths with some interesting people during his travels. In a way, having Coulson make his way around the world and come into contact with “special” people is a sweet way of bringing his story full circle. One can only hope that we one day get to see Clark Gregg don his signature shades and continue doing what he does best.
