Looks Like John Cena’s HBO Max Peacemaker Show Is Moving Forward Sooner Than Expected

John Cena as Peacmaker for The Suicide Squad (2021)

The cinematic side of the DC universe is reaching into television, as films like The Batman and The Suicide Squad are poised to receive television spinoffs. The latter will be getting a companion show in the form of Peacemaker, which will center on John Cena’s titular character. Many didn’t imagine that James Gunn and HBO Max were going to announce a spinoff TV show but, now, it’s even more surprising to see that the project is coming along faster than expected.

James Gunn recently posted on Twitter to thank Microsoft and Xbox for a personalized Xbox Series X console. He also mentioned that he’s about to begin a two-week quarantine in Canada ahead of his work on Peacemaker, which was originally reported to be starting production at the beginning of 2021. This is an unexpected, but more than welcome, piece of news. James Gunn has been a very busy man as of late, but he appears to be moving right along with his projects. With work beginning on Peacemaker, one would be led to believe that he’s virtually finished with his work on The Suicide Squad. And of course, it may be safe to assume that after Gunn has finished up with the TV spinoff, he’ll likely jump back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to finish off his fan-favorite, cosmic franchise.

Like The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker seems to be something of a passion project for James Gunn. The filmmaker is writing the 8-episode series and is directing a few of the episodes as well. He, alongside Peter Safran, also serves as an executive producer on the series.

Story details on Peacemaker are being kept close to the vest, though reports indicate that the series will take place before the events of the film. It’s also been reported that John Cena’s violent justice-seeker will be joined by The Suicide Squad’s Steve Agee, who will be returning to reprise one of the two roles he plays in the film. On the big screen, Agee will be playing Belle Reve warden John Economos and supervillain King Shark. While Economos seems like the most likely choice, there is a chance he could bring his giant, carnivorous Big Bad to the small screen.

Interestingly, John Economos also serves as an aide of sorts to the woman behind Task Force X – Amanda Waller. If Agee is indeed playing Economos, is there a chance would could also see Viola Davis reprise her role? We’ll have to wait and see.

What we can say at this point is that Peacemaker appears to be making great progress as the cameras prepare to role. And even though we don’t know what we can really expect at this point, you can’t help but get excited when you hear that James Gunn is preparing to get to work.
