What Happens After The Legend of Korra: 5 Events To Know From The Dark Horse Comics

The Legend of Korra Cover

You know, for a time, The Legend of Korra was often seen as a blight on the Avatar universe. There are a few reasons why some people thought this (none of them really all that good, if you ask me), but thankfully, the show has gotten a lot more respect recently now that the whole series is available to watch on Netflix. Too bad the series is over, though, right? Wrong! Because the story of Korra has actually been expanded upon in the Dark Horse Comics!

Just like how Avatar: The Last Airbender has been telling new stories in comic form, so has The Legend of Korra. There are actually 2 story arcs now with three issues apiece. And those story arcs are Turf Wars and Ruins of the Empire. Both of these are considered canon, so if you haven’t read them yet and you’re a fan, then you’re definitely missing out. But that’s why I’m here, to let you know just what you have been missing out on. Now, I won’t spoil everything in this article, but if you are interested in reading the comics then just consider this a spoiler alert as I will be going over some key details of what happens after The Legend of Korra.

Korra and Asami Go On Vacation Together In The Spirit World And Almost Immediately Run Into Trouble With The Spirits (Turf Wars: Part 1)

At the end of The Legend of Korra, Korra and Asami officially become Korrasami and walk off into the spirit portal together holding hands. The end, right? Well, no, actually, as it’s just the beginning. Because in the comics, Korrasami have fun swimming and jumping on giant mushrooms together in the Spirit World, only to end up climbing up a mountain that turns out to be a spirit who is angry at Korra for opening up a portal to the Spirit World in the first place.

He tosses Korrasami, telling them to never return again, but they’re fine and even share a kiss that Nickelodeon wouldn’t have dared allow back in 2014. But while everything is cool with Korrasami, a dragon-eel spirit isn’t pleased about the portal being open and holds Korra accountable for it and warns her that she better keep it safe. Korra agrees to keep it safe, but we all know that’s not going to happen. And it doesn’t, which leads us to…

A New Villain Emerges Who Is Half-Man, Half-Spirit (Turf Wars: Part 2)

The Triple Threat Triad is up to no good again, but this time with a new leader named Tokuga. Tokuga is causing trouble in Republic City when the dragon-eel from earlier attacks him and merges with him, creating a half-man, half spirit. Meanwhile, President Raiko is failing in the polls for reelection and is trying to separate himself from Korra and her problems concerning the spirit portal, as the spirits don’t want anything to do with people anymore.

But surprise, surprise, Tokuga doesn’t like the fact that he’s been mutated, so he’s going to take it out on everybody he can, most notably Korra, who he blames for his transformation. He takes Asami hostage and threatens to end her life, using her as a pawn, but also trying to force her into building a weapon for his clan to use against Republic City. Honestly, though, he’s a little one-note as a character and kind of boring. But a new villain is a new villain, and as I said before, this story is canon, so you just have to accept him.

Zhu Li

Zhu Li Becomes President Of Republic City (Turf Wars: Part 3)

Korra, Bolin, and Mako stop Tokuga, and blah, blah, blah. Again, Tokuga is kind of bland. But what is interesting in Turf Wars is Korrasami’s relationship and the fact that Zhu Li becomes the freaking President of Republic City, beating President Raiko handedly since Raiko sucks.

And this is why I love the comics. They fully expand upon the world of The Legend of Korra. Republic City is such a unique setting, and to know that Zhu Li went from being Varrick’s assistant to the President of the city is pretty amazing. She really did “do the thing”!

Kuvira Seeks Redemption (Ruins of the Empire: Part 1)

Season 4 of The Legend of Korra is really interesting because it introduced us to the badass, Kuvira. At the end of The Legend of Korra, Kuvira surrenders and is taken into captivity. But in Ruins of the Empire, we get our new big bad in Commander Guan, who is the second-in-command for the Earth Empire. Commander Guan is upset that Kuvira would actually surrender when he feels that they were on the path to victory.

But in this story arc, we get a sense that Kuvira is changing as a character. Because while Kuvira doesn’t feel that she’s guilty for her war crimes, she does feel that in order to be trusted again, she has to do some soul searching. And she aims to do so by stopping Commander Guan, who has ambitions to rule by any means necessary. Even if it means getting off the battlefield and going into politics.

Toph

Toph Almost Becomes A Governor (Ruins of the Empire: Part 2)

In the most bizarre B-story in the world of Avatar ever, Toph almost becomes a governor. You see, King Wu wants to make the Earth Kingdom more democratic so he’s actually stepping down as King (at first) and holding elections. But when Commander Guan enters the fray, things change since unbeknownst to everybody else, Commander Guan is brainwashing people to vote for him. So in order to counter this, Korra suggests that Toph run for office since she’s probably the most popular person in the entire Earth Empire.

But she unfortunately doesn’t have to go through with the election since there are bigger issues at play in the storyline involving Kuvira’s possible turn back to the dark side and defeating Commander Guan. It’s a pretty bizarre B-story, but one that thankfully brings Toph back into the world of Korra, and if anybody knows anything about me, then they know that I love my Toph.

Honestly, if you’re a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, then you have to read these comics since they’re just too good. I’m eagerly anticipating the next Korra story arc whatever it may be. But if I can make a suggestion, can it possibly center around Varrick and Bolin this time? Just saying.
