Ahsoka Tano on Star Wars Rebels (2018)

The Mandalorian Season 2 is sure to have some interesting developments in store for its titular protagonist, yet many are still wondering what lies ahead for the Child (or Baby Yoda). While the adorable alien’s origins and future are still a mystery, Season 2 could shed light on both through the presence of another character. Most know by now that Star Wars fan-favorite Ahsoka Tano is reportedly appearing in the new season, and a new fan theory asserts that she could be connected to Baby Yoda through a classic Clone Wars story arc.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars fans may remember the “Mortis” arc of Season 3, which saw Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka arrive on a mysterious plant that’s strong with the Force. While there, they encounter a family of powerful Force-users: the Father, the Daughter and the Son. Each of them also represents a different aspect of the Force: the Father is the balance, the Daughter is the light side and the Son is the dark side.

The second episode of the arc ended with the Daughter sacrificed herself to save the Father from being killed by the selfish Son. And during the third part, the Father would kill himself to take the Son’s powers away, allowing Anakin to kill the evil, young man and restore the balance of the Force. Interestingly, during the story, Ahsoka is corrupted by the Son, but following the Daughter’s death, the Father transfers her life to Ahsoka to break the dark side’s hold over her.

So what does this all have to do with The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda? Well, a recent fan theory posted to Reddit asserts that “the Child” is aptly named for a reason. With Ahoska now carrying the Daughter’s life-force, she theoretically could now be viewed as a later incarnation of that character that’s (metaphorically) known as “the Mother.” With this, she has the power to create and (symbolically) makes The Child. And based on her experiences on Mortis, she knows the Child is made up of light and dark and that for there to be balance, Ahsoka must perish.

The theory later goes on to say that the Child will grow into the new Father and that he will (metaphorically) create a new Daughter and Son, who the user theorizes could be the Sequel Trilogy’s Rey and Ben Solo.

The “Mortis” arc was one of the most complex stories told within Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and the three-episode tale received acclaim from fans and critics. Not only was it thoroughly entertaining, but it also illuminated key aspects of the Force that fans may have wondered about.

This new theory may sound far-fetched (and a little confusing to those not in the know), but there is validity to it all. While Ahsoka obviously isn’t the biological mother of Baby Yoda, she could symbolically be the parent to help guide and eventually sacrifice herself so that the Child can help bring balance to the Force. This could explain why she crosses paths with Mando and the baby in the new season.

Admittedly, while this Reddit user does bring up some solid points, there is the possibility that they’re reading into things too deeply. But if Star Wars producer Dave Filoni has proven anything, it’s that he’s incredibly cerebral when plotting things out.

We’ll see what binds Ahsoka and Baby Yoda together when Season 2 of The Mandalorian arrives on Disney+ this fall.
