DC’s Stargirl Renewed For Season 2 With A Big Change

Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitemore/ Stargirl on Stargirl (2020)

Stargirl is the latest venture in DC TV’s extensive family of live-action series, and the energetic new show has managed to strike a chord with comic book fans and general viewers alike. So it should come as no surprise that the freshman series has officially been renewed for a second season. However, there’s going to be a slight change when it comes to Courtney Whitmore and the JSA’s further adventures on the small screen.

The CW has announced that Stargirl has not only been renewed for Season 2 but that the show will now air exclusively on the network and its digital platforms. Up until this point, the show’s main home had been the DC Universe streaming service where new episodes premiered ahead of their broadcast airings on The CW.

Stargirl centers on Courtney Whitmore, played by Brec Bassinger, who moves to the small town of Blue Valley, Nebraska with her mother, stepbrother and stepfather, Pat (Luke Wilson). She eventually learns that Pat was once the sidekick of the legendary Starman of the Justice Society of America and, with the help of the Cosmic Staff, she becomes a hero in her own right and forms a new iteration of the JSA.

Since its debut, Stargirl has earned rave reviews from critics, with many citing its cast, lighthearted tone and special effects among the highlights. Comic book fans have also cited it for its reverence to the source material.

While Stargirl doesn’t actually exist in The CW’s established Arrowverse, it was previously established during the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event that the show exists on a parallel Earth in the DC multiverse.

Now that the show will exclusively air alongside The CW’s other DC programs like The Flash and Supergirl, Stargirl is now a step closer to crossing over with the characters of the Arrowverse. The producers have teased the idea of crossing over the characters, and it would certainly appear that the pieces are being put into place for it to happen.

Aside from the prospect of Courtney Whitemore rubbing shoulders with the heroes of Earth Prime, there are plenty of other questions swirling around the young heroine and her teammates for Season 2. One of these is the prospect of more DC Comics heroes making appearances on the show. Creator, writer and co-showrunner Geoff Johns has acknowledged the impact of characters like Flash and Green Lantern on the show, but he’s opted not to confirm whether they’ll actually appear.

Stargirl is currently a little over halfway through its first season, which means that in the coming weeks, we should have a clearer picture of what to expect from Season 2. And based on the way things are building, the season is likely to go out with a bang.

New episodes of Stargirl currently premiere on Mondays on DC Universe before airing on The CW every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.
