Netflix hasn't been afraid to dive into dark subject matter in recent years, ranging from scripted fare like The Haunting of Hill House to docu-series like Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes. Now, the streaming giant is jumping back into some hauntings, and not just via The Haunting of Bly Manor. A gritty series revolving around haunted places is in the works, and there are major reasons to get excited.

First, Variety reports the project -- which has yet to receive a title -- will be a "gritty and meticulous study" of some of the most notorious haunted locations throughout the United States. There is no shortage of places in the U.S. purported to be very haunted, and a whole season of a docu-series along these lines could probably be set in different locations within New Orleans alone.

Given the descriptors of "gritty and meticulous," I'm guessing viewers won't be confusing this series with the likes of Ghost Hunters (which was recently rebooted with some changes) and Ghost Nation. So, if you like hauntings, history, and docu-series, this should be a project worth checking out. And there's more exciting news!

The gritty docu-series comes from Joe Berlinger, who has a positive track record with Netflix thanks to two high-profile projects: Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. Conversations With a Killer was a docu-series that proved Berlinger can deliver info in an entertaining and chilling way, while Extremely Wicked demonstrated that he can handle scripted fare as well.

Could this haunted docu-series require Joe Berlinger's talents for crafting both a documentary-style narrative and elements of scripted fare? If there are reenactments for this project, his talents on both fronts could come in handy. I'm guessing the ghosts who supposedly kept a Million Dollar Listing star from having sex in his new house aren't the kind that would win some screentime in the Netflix project.

That said, I'm almost surprised at least a streaming service hasn't ordered a ghost sex TV show just yet. There are many real-life examples to use as inspiration. The more you know, right? I can already see the husband-and-wife team who could co-host.

Netflix hasn't announced a title for the upcoming Joe Berlinger docu-series about notorious haunted locations in America, let alone a premiere date, but the good news is that there is plenty that will be available on the streamer for however much longer the wait will be. For a look at what Joe Berlinger has already brought to the streamer, you can find Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile on Netflix now.

Additionally, there are still some titles yet to release before the end of 2019, including The Witcher. As for what's in store in the new year, check out our 2020 Netflix premiere schedule.
