Why Star Wars Resistance Is Ending After Season 2

Star Wars Resistance Disney

Star Wars Resistance looked to be the next iconic long-running animated Star Wars series, but as fans learned not long after the debut of its Season 2 trailer, that wasn't the case. In a move few saw coming, news broke that the adventures of Kaz and the rest of the characters on the Colossus would conclude after Season 2. Why was the plug being pulled on the series so soon?

CinemaBlend was present at a press junket with executive producers Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Brandon Auman, who fielded questions about the upcoming final season of Star Wars Resistance. Auman addressed the primary thought process about ending the show after Season 2, and why it felt like a good time to conclude the series.

We wanted it to feel like it was just a complete thing. Like so that we have a beginning and then it's really kind of just going into Rise of Skywalker. We thought if it went another like season, it just felt kind of like ‘Oh the last movie we just ended, the sagas ended,’ so going one more year after just felt weird to us. With Clone Wars and Rebels that stuff was like obviously created years after those movies. For us, it was like ‘Well this just feels like a natural, organic [end]. Let's just do this [season] and we'll go right into [Rise of Skywalker] ."

The Star Wars Resistance team felt like bridging the gaps between the sequel trilogy films was enough, and decided that continuing the story of the Colossus during or beyond Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker just didn't feel right. Though Star Wars Resistance's characters have seemingly little to do with the Skywalker Saga, it makes sense that their story is contained within that era of Star Wars.

It's really that simple as producers dismissed the notion that Star Wars Resistance was ended due to low ratings, fan response, or low toy merchandise sales. Another piece of the puzzle may lie in the fact that there's no immediate plans to highlight what will happen in the time immediately post-Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That means even if Star Wars: Resistance continued another season, it could really only go up to the end of Episode IX.

And for those wondering if there were difference between Star Wars Resistance airing while the sequel trilogy is ongoing as opposed to Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels years apart from their respective trilogies, there were indeed. Athena Portillo said there were quite a few times in the making of Season 2 where the team had to wait on details to be sent to them from the folks at Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker so they could ensure their canon was in line with what's happening in the film. Sometimes that meant waiting on details, and doing what could be done elsewhere until those sweet spoilers were available.

We would be in pause mode and, as you know, if we're working on several episodes, we're working on several episodes at different phases. So if we're waiting on something in animation, we'll put that aside and we'll just get started on this while we wait to hear how they plan to end the saga and how would we want to incorporate that.

So while Star Wars Resistance will lead up to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, some details relevant to the film's plot couldn't be revealed ahead of the movie's actual premiere. That's one positive to Tam joining the First Order, as she may be fans' first-hand glimpse of how the organization is doing post-Snoke. Let's hope she eventually sees the error in judgment and links back up with Kaz and friends before the show says goodbye!
