Is Supernatural Foreshadowing The Winchesters' Deaths In Final Season Poster?

The beginning of fall TV season this year is also the beginning of the end of Supernatural. The longest-running show in the history of The CW will wrap forever with the conclusion of its fifteenth season. Sam and Dean Winchester are still fighting the good fight to save people and hunt things after all the time, but the question is: what will happen to them when the final credits roll? Will they pass the torch to other hunters? Continue hunting despite the series' ending? Or will they finally die and stay dead?

Fans won't know for sure for quite a while. Although Jared Padalecki did promise that the show will end with "some version of peace," nobody at the show is spilling any hard details about what's going down in the grand finale. Padalecki has also said he doesn't want "doom and gloom." So what's happening?

Fittingly, Friday the 13th saw the release of the new poster for Supernatural Season 15, and it's packed with symbols. Are they foreshadowing the deaths of the Winchesters? First, take a look at the poster:

Admittedly, the poster doesn't show the Winchesters on death's door or anything, but the Impala sure does look like it could be ready to drive up the stairway to heaven. The fire blazing around Baby isn't exactly encouraging either, and I have to say that I can't think of a more fitting way for Dean to head up to the great beyond for good than in the Impala wearing angel wings.

Okay, so Baby isn't exactly wearing angel wings in the poster. Still, that staircase doesn't look like it's simply leading out of the bunker or anywhere on the mortal plane. The anti-possession symbol at the end of the staircase (and that Sam and Dean have had tattooed on their chests) indicates that we're not looking at Hell here.

The Winchester boys have earned themselves slots in heaven by this point, I'd say, and not just because they've already both had stints in Hell. We already know that the Winchesters are going to lose people for real rather than just in the Supernatural sense of death not necessarily being the end.

Throw in the fact that there are ravens flying around the staircase as well as a raven perched on the Impala, and I'm inclined to think that Supernatural isn't going to just end with the brothers hanging out alive and well. Ravens are never good omens -- no, not those kind of good omens - in pretty much any kind of project featuring mythological or fantasy elements, although there are exceptions.

And then there's the statement at the top of the poster: "As it is written, so it shall end." This could have more than one meaning. The ending for the series is already planned out, so that is quite literally true. There have also been prophecies about the Winchesters, and the big bad of the final season is literally God, who is an author pretty mad at the brothers for messing up his stories.

Jared Padalecki has been openly on board with the possibility of Supernatural ending with Sam and Dean dying, even citing a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid-type of conclusion. For his part, Jensen Ackles had "so much trouble" when he learned what the series finale would entail, and had to call up an old friend from the early years of the show for some clarity.

Whatever happens in the final moments of the finale, fans have a while to wait before they find out. The fifteenth and final season of Supernatural doesn't premiere for another few weeks. Still, there are plenty of other projects hitting the airwaves in the meantime, so there's a lot to look forward to.
