Yellowstone has cast actor Dabney Coleman in a vital role. It turns out that he is not the only acting legend wanting to come on the hit show. Yellowstone star and Season 3 series regular Denim Richards, who plays Colby on the drama, has shared that many want the chance as well. Speaking with CinemaBlend, Richards told me this:

It’s just like any time there is a legend coming on the show, I mean we have so many legends that come onto the show. You know, we have the Danny Hustons and the Gil Birminghams and you have all of these amazing, phenomenal artists. So, when he [Dabney Coleman] came on to do the season finale, it’s just like add another one to the list. It’s like so amazing, and I think that is kind of what’s so beautiful about this show is that there are so many people that want to be on the show.

An opportunity to star on Yellowstone is in high-demand. It makes sense that so many artists are clamoring for a shot to go toe-to-toe with the drama's incredible ensemble. As Denim Richards points out, the show is home to quite an array of talent. Danny Huston and Gil Birmingham are among them.

In Season 2, the show welcomed Neal McDonough as big bad Malcolm Beck, a villain who gets viler by the moment. Another actor climbing up into the saddle of the Season 2 finale will be Dabney Coleman. The screen legend will star in a role that is pivotal to understanding the present.

As Denim Richards said, you have to add another legend to the list. Dabney Coleman will play John Dutton’s never-before-seen father, John Dutton Sr, who fought to keep the ranch before him. Prepare to meet the previous Dutton patriarch in a flashback sequence. Check out a picture from the Season 2 finale below:

Please note that Kevin Costner is rocking a mustache in the flashback scene pictured above. In previous Yellowstone flashbacks, Josh Lucas has worn one to portray the character.

The good news for fans is that Yellowstone’s legend-drawing status is not showing any signs of slowing down. Season 3 just added The Morning Show’s Karen Pittman in a pivotal role and the show previously announced a Lost star joining the cast.

It sounds like there is a steady supply of interest from talented parties to continue starring. What motivates screen legends to come onto the show? Yellowstone’s Denim Richards shared what drives them:

But the show gets these quality artists that want to come in and just be a part of a phenomenal ensemble. I think the one thing too to actually to add to that is like all of these phenomenal artists that come with such clear accolades that come onto the show, they’re not trying to come onto the show to like put their imprint on it.They just want to be a part of the story, and I think that’s what makes this show, so amazing is that you have this A-list talent from head to toe, and everybody just wants to come in and service the story, and nobody is there to service themselves, and I think that’s what makes this such a phenomenal experience. So, I’m just super excited to have folks come on, and be able to also get to experience some of that as well.

How lovely is that? From what Denim Richards is saying, Yellowstone sounds like an incredible experience for artists. No wonder Dabney Coleman decided to come aboard, and just in time for the finale! Casting on Season 3 continues, with a recent addition confirming the survival of a critical character.

Fans will get the chance to see Dabney Coleman on Yellowstone next week. Are answers about the past on their way? Does Grandpa Dutton know why Beth hates Jamie? If so, I hope he spills the truth. These mysterious hints can only take this viewer so far.

The Season 2 finale will be when viewers find out if the show kills off a Dutton before the current installment ends. It is a fearful prospect that the penultimate episode made all the more tangible. How will the finale set up the Season 3 arc of Denim Richards' Colby? Find out next week!

The Season 2 finale of Yellowstone airs Wednesday, August 28 at 10 p.m. ET on the Paramount Network. While waiting for the terrific series to return, you have many fall premieres you can watch.
