USA's legal drama Suits is preparing to bid adieu after an epic nine seasons of winning over cable audiences. Not too long ago, it was announced that Patrick J. Adams would reprise his role as original character Mike Ross, and Adams has revealed why he decided to return for Suits' final season.

As fans remember, Patrick J. Adams exited Suits following Season 7 along with eminent (now former) co-star Meghan Markle. On-screen, Adams’ Mike and Markle’s Rachel got married and walked into the virtual sunset together in that season's finale. Now, Adams is returning for Suits’ final season, and explained it to ET like this:

Ultimately, it was about coming back. It was about, 'We'd love to get the band back together,' basically. Do one last trip around the world. It was as simple as that. For me, it was just an excuse to come and see everybody and really be here for the final moment.

Thank you, nostalgia! Patrick J. Adams’ reasoning for returning is pretty sweet, in my opinion. Who can blame him for wanting to come back and hang out with his former TV family for Suits’ final bow? He was on the show since the beginning, and he wanted to be there for the end.

Suits did its best to handle Mike and Rachel’s absence in Season 8, with Harvey & Co. running things. Despite earlier rumors, Mike will be back for Season 9 solo, but fans have a good reason to believe Rachel won't be far away from her husband’s heart, thanks to Patrick J. Adams.

There was another poignant aspect to Patrick J. Adams’ decision to return to Suits. He wanted to be there for the final cut. Adams said:

When I left the first time, it was just me. I was saying goodbye and I knew this thing would continue after me. Now I know that every time we'd shoot a last scene in the bullpen or in Harvey's office or in Donna's office or wherever, I'll get to be there for that. Then, when we say 'cut' for the final time and Suits is over and that's it and it's in the past, I know I'll get to be there with everybody when it happens. For me, that's a huge gift.

Patrick J. Adams got to be there for all of the firsts, so he wanted to be back for some of Suits' final moments, as well. Such as his final case against a trusted friend.

What can fans expect from the return trip of Adams’ Mike? He will be squaring off with Gabriel Macht’s Harvey and Katherine Heigl’s Samantha in a substantial legal case. The episode is titled “If the Shoe Fits,” and it will be an intense one if the picture above is any indication. In the photo, you can see Mike pointing his finger at Harvey as Donna looks on. Please note Mike’s wedding ring! Rachel’s presence is felt!

Season 9 is heading towards the finish line. Hopefully, with a happy ending for another certain couple. Katherine Heigl previously spoke out on the worst way the show could end, and they play a role in it.

As for Patrick J. Adams, he already has another non-Suits job lined up. After starring in a scene-stealing role in Amazon's Sneaky Pete, Adams is taking flight in another project. The actor has signed on to star as Maj. John Glenn in National Geographic’s Right Stuff adaptation.

For Suits fans, the anticipation lies with tonight’s new episode and Mike’s return! New episodes of Suits' ninth and final season air Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on USA. Gina TorresSuits spinoff, Pearson, airs right after it at 10 p.m. ET. Both legal dramas are part of this year’s summer premieres.
