ABC Is In Talks For Next Marvel Series After Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Ends

agents of shield season 6 cast

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had a good run on ABC, and the show is going into its seventh and final season soon. But, if you're a Marvel fan who fears missing that sweet comic book action on the network every season, you're in luck. ABC is already working to make sure it can keep its toe in those lucrative Marvel waters for more seasons to come.

ABC is currently in talks to get another Marvel-based series up and running. We don't know many details right now, but, according to Deadline, the network wants to focus on a female superhero. There's also no information yet on whether or not this potential series is being developed for next fall or sometime in the mid-season.

As you can probably imagine, ABC hasn't offered any specifics on which female superhero might be coming to the small screen soon, but ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke did give the outlet a tiny hint as to who this superhero might be:

...something brand new, mostly.

Well, that is...shocking. OK, not really. Even though Marvel has been (pretty successfully) throwing heroes at us on a regular basis since 2008 on the big and small screens, we have barely begun to explore the world of female heroes. It makes a lot of sense, then, that ABC would want to join with Marvel to dive into a character, and possibly even a setting, that we haven't seen represented in live action before.

I suppose this means that the late, great Agent Carter isn't coming back for a third season. While I'm still salty about that show's cancellation, as long as they find a cool hero and story for this new series and do it right, I'm totally willing to give it a shot. Karey Burke's comments also mean that characters like Misty Knight, Coleen Wing and Trish Walker, who appeared on Netflix's Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones respectively, won't be showing up to lead their own shows on ABC, but, that really isn't a huge surprise at this point.

In case you're wondering how Marvel and ABC is going to narrow down the hundreds of female superheroes at Marvel's disposal who haven't been in live action before for this series, it turns out that they have quite a head start on the process. Karey Burke also revealed this intriguing detail:

I have spoken to Marvel and we are in active talks about one project in particular.

Oooh. Obviously, this doesn't really narrow things down too much for most people, but it still makes it sound like ABC has been in the process of whittling female heroes down for long enough that they now know exactly who they want to see show up in her own series. Marvel now has free reign with all of its X-Men characters, for instance, so that opens things up even more when it comes to potential stories.

There are a lot of intriguing aspects to this whole idea, and you can be sure that CinemaBlend will be following the development of this project as more details are revealed. In the meantime, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be back for Season 7, its last, sometime in the coming months. You can keep up with all of this fall's television debuts to help fill out your viewing schedule until then.
