When it comes time to end something that's been a major part of one's life for many years, it will, naturally, bring up a lot of emotions. Feelings of loss, relief, grief, joy and many more things can come up, whether we're talking about something as personal as leaving a city you've lived in all your life or changing careers after many years. Well, we've seen that actors often deal with the same type of thing when the show they've been a part of for a long time is finally shuffling off the television schedule.
The process of letting go of your job, character, cast mates, crew, friends, schedule and all the other things related to leaving that show behind can leave actors like Kit Harington fraught with feelings. Now, the Game of Thrones star has spoken out about what he thinks of people who lay their eyes on the final season of the mega hit fantasy series and trash it in any way. And, he is not being gentle about his thoughts.
How I feel about the show right now is quite defiant. I think no matter what anyone thinks about this season—and I don’t mean to sound mean about critics here—but whatever critic spends half an hour writing about this season and makes their [negative] judgement on it, in my head they can go fuck themselves. 'Cause I know how much work was put into this. I know how much people cared about this. I know how much pressure people put on themselves and I know how many sleepless nights working or otherwise people had on this show. Because they cared about it so much. Because they cared about the characters. Because they cared about the story. Because they cared about not letting people down.
Ooooh. Kit Harington was not kidding when he said he was feeling defiant about how people, critics especially, end up feeling about Season 8 of Game of Thrones. If you don't like it, maybe just don't tell Harington. Or, at least be prepared to head to a quiet corner and go fuck yourself afterwards. Might I suggest a nice cocktail and your favorite chocolates to help you get in the mood?
Kit Harington is clearly fully aware that his comments sound harsh, and he's already admitted that he knows not everyone who watches Game of Thrones' last season will be satisfied with the whole thing or the very end, in particular. But, it's not hard to see where he's coming from in wanting the haters to go fuck themselves. As he said, everyone who's been a part of Season 8 has put their heart and soul into it to try and make the finale the best they can possibly make it.
I mean, can you imagine the pressure? It would be like having your boss trust you with a big project at work, the outcome of which will determine whether or not you get that promotion you've been gunning for for a few years. But, in this case your boss is millions of fans worldwide and the promotion is the lasting legacy of Game of Thrones. Just thinking about screwing up the very ending of a show that people have been addicted to from day one and ruining its legacy is frightening, and I've never been anywhere near working on an episode of the show. So, you can see how intense this experience has probably been for all involved.
Kit Harington wants to make it clear that everyone has done everything in their power to make Game of Thrones Season 8 the best they could. And, really? He's just glad they got to tell all of the story they wanted to tell. Here's what else Harington had to say in his talk with Esquire:
Now if people feel let down by it, I don’t give a fuck—because everyone tried their hardest. That’s how I feel. In the end, no one’s bigger fans of the show than we are, and we’re kind of doing it for ourselves. That’s all we could do, really. And I was just happy we got to the end.
