Schitt's Creek Creators Reveal The Show Is Ending At Pop, But There's Good News

Just a few short weeks after Schitt’s Creek had a bit of a viral moment on the internet, we’ve learned some bad news. The long-running show will be wrapping up on Pop, which recently was purchased by CBS in a new deal. The good news? The creators have ultimately decided that Schitt’s Creek will live on for one more season before saying sayonara to fans.

Although unexpected cancellations happen and actually happen fairly often, it is becoming more common for shows with avid fanbases to get to see their shows end on a note the creators get to control and can be proud of. That seems to be the case here, as Schitt’s Creek’s creators have been given the opportunity to end the series when they would like to and not when the network felt it was time.

In a message from creators Dan Levy and Eugene Levy, the two creative minds actually start on a high note, mentioning,

We are very excited to announce that Schitt’s Creek is coming back for a sixth season on CBC and Pop in 2020!

Good news! Exclamation point! Unfortunately, they quickly get around to letting fans know Schitt’s Creek is actually closing out its lengthy run on Pop after the next season.

We also wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that we have decided Season 6 will be our last. We are so grateful to have been given the time and creative freedom to tell this story in its totality, concluding with a final chapter that we had envisioned from the very beginning. It’s not lost on us what a rare privilege it is in this industry to get to decide when your show should take its final bow.

In case you wondered how long Season 6 might be, Dan and Eugene Levy also mentioned that 14 episodes will be produced during the final season. Previous seasons have featured an unlucky 13 episodes apiece, but for Season 5 the show switched formats to 15 episodes and will be following that trend into its final season.

Schitt’s Creek is currently airing its fifth season on Pop, so there are plenty of new episodes to come before the end finally happens. In fact, this season is expected to air on Pop through April 9th, so if you're a Game of Thrones fan, you'll only have a few scant days between the end of the comedy and the beginning of the HBO drama, which is back on April 14. If you are watching Schitt's Creek streaming, Netflix has the rights to the first four seasons of the show, and typically the streaming service gets episodes some time after current seasons wrap on network TV. You can keep tabs on that with our full schedule.

Given the 2020 release date for Season 6, there will be new Schitt's Creek for quite some time, so don't fret if you are a little sad about the pop series' demise. There's still a lot more to look forward to and none of this is happening suddenly or abrupty. It could be way worse, really, and yes I fought really hard not to include a "Schitt-y" pun in that sentence. New episodes of Schitt's Creek air on Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET.
