Fans anticipating the sixth season of HBO's Silicon Valley just got dealt a significant blow. They will be waiting a whole lot longer than we initially thought it would take for the new season to come together. In fact, there will be a considerable production delay on Season 6. Yes, one of those.

As it turns out, production on Season 6 will not begin until the summer of next year (2019). At that point, the show will already have been off the air for over a year. Plus, if filming doesn't even happen until next summer, reports indicate it is unlikely fans will get to see the sixth season until the following year (2020). Why the delay? The super busy schedule of the series' showrunner and executive producer, Alec Berg.

Along with all of his duties on Silicon Valley, Alec Berg has a big commitment on Barry as the showrunner, too. Due to to those commitments on the other HBO series the premium cabler has decided to continue working around his timetable.

An HBO rep confirmed to TVLine that Alec Berg will focus on the sixth season of Silicon Valley after he finishes Barry. The future of Silicon Valley following its upcoming installment is currently unknown. The tech-centric comedy was renewed alongside Barry earlier this year. A firm decision that might give closure to the series (in the vein of The Big Bang Theory) has not been reached yet, according to the report.

The end could be in sight for the critically-acclaimed series, which has garnered an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Comedy ever since its premiere season. It's really a staggering feat made all the more impressive by the stiff competition the series has faced over the past five years.

If Silicon Valley is nearing the end of its run, there will be plenty of time to decide. Albeit, next summer will be here before you know it. Alec Berg previously said that Silicon Valley could be nearing the end back when Season 4 wrapped. Perhaps, beginning work on Season 6 may help to clarify things.

With so many shows wrapping up their runs, I personally think it would be sad to lose another television fixture. Still, networks have been getting better and better at letting us know whether or not a long-running show will be ending in advance. Here's hoping that Silicon Valley gets the same sort of notice.

If it does choose to exit stage left, Silicon Valley will be among several HBO series wrapping up their runs in the near future. HBO is gearing up to lose its cornerstone series in Game of Thrones, next year. Then there are the critically acclaimed shows, The Deuce, and Veep. Both TV shows are on their way out. The latter loss coupled with the potential end of Silicon Valley in 2020 could impact HBO's Emmy scorecard in the future.

Thankfully for HBO, the network will not have to worry about its Emmy presence in the near future. A premiere date for Silicon Valley's sixth season has not been formally set yet. In the meantime, the onslaught of fall and midseason premieres should help keep you busy while you await its return.
