Michelle Williams Secretly Got Married

Michelle Williams Brokeback Mountain

Michelle Williams is a bit of a contradiction. She's both a very famous public figure and she's an intensely private person. The actress can be seen in some high profile movies lately, including last year's All the Money in the World, this spring's comedy I Feel Pretty, and this October's forthcoming Marvel adaptation, Venom. But even though she keeps herself in the spotlight professionally, there are a few things about her private life that haven't previously been disclosed. For instance, she's married now. Yep. As it was announced in a recent profile, Williams and singer-songwriter Phil Elverum -- who were a couple previously unknown to the public -- were married in a private ceremony in Adirondacks earlier this year. Attendance only included close friends and the daughters of the newlyweds. Turns out, Cardi B isn't the only one who knows how to surprise us with unexpected marriage news. Here's what we know about Michelle Williams' previously undisclosed relationship, and now marriage, to Phil Elverum.

The surprising marriage reveal was disclosed in Michelle Williams' recent profile in Vanity Fair. In the piece, Williams says she bonded with her new husband through their mutual understanding of losing a partner due to tragic circumstances while trying to raise a small child. For Michelle Williams, that tragedy was the loss of Heath Ledger, the late actor she dated for three years after they worked together on Ang Lee's acclaimed drama Brokeback Mountain. It has been ten years since Ledger left this world filled with a wealth of talent and raw potential. She remembers him through their daughter, Matilda (12).

Here's how Michelle Williams described falling in love again, and how she grew to open her heart again with Matilda helping to guide her by her side. The actress admits that, while she never gave up on finding love again, she was waiting to find that radical acceptance she found with Heath Ledger. Ultimately, she believes she has that love and acceptance again through her relationship with Phil Elverum.

I never gave up on love. I always say to Matilda, 'Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes.' Obviously I've never once in my life talked about a relationship, but Phil isn't anyone else. And that's worth something. Ultimately the way he loves me is the way I want to live my life on the whole. I work to be free inside of the moment. I parent to let Matilda feel free to be herself, and I am finally loved by someone who makes me feel free.

While Phil Elverum was previously living in Anacortes, Washington, the musician lives in Brooklyn with his new wife and their daughters now. As for why Michelle Williams decided to reveal her relationship now, because she wanted to provide the hope she has found through her renewed sense of love. Here's how Michelle Williams describes that feeling of hope and kinship she has found with her husband.

I don't really want to talk about any of it. But there's that tease, that lure, that's like, What if this helps somebody? What if somebody who has always journeyed in this way, who has struggled as much as I struggled, and looked as much as I looked, finds something that helps them? ... Don't settle. Don't settle for something that feels like a prison, or is hard, or hurts you. If it doesn't feel like love, it's not love.

Venom makes its way into theaters on October 5th, complete with Michelle Williams' character Anne Weying.
