Cathy Yan Talks Dead Pigs, MUBI and More

Powered by RedCircle

Director Cathy Yan joins ReelBlend once again to discuss her debut film Dead Pigs. The film has had an interesting journey as it was originally completed and ran the festival circuit before Yan landed Birds of Prey. That said, the film is finally available for audiences to enjoy on the MUBI streaming service.

You may have heard of the streamer most recently when Martin Scorsese called them out alongside the Criterion Channel as rare examples of platforms that actually curate their film selections versus an algorithmically-generated set of recommendations. Yan provided her own perspective on the MUBI service and the concept of human curation in film. We also touch on her experience as a journalist before directing, and how that informs her storytelling. We ask about some visual choices in the film, including wider shots and the creative use of subtitles, and how they leant themselves to the story.

She is a fantastic return guest, and if you missed our first discussion with her on Birds of Prey, you can check that out here.
