It’s a tale as old as time and a song as old as rhyme in the post-pandemic world of moviegoing. A highly-anticipated movie pushes its release date, eventually leading to a longer wait and ultimately the decision to hold or play. Sony’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage is the player in question at the moment, and new rumors are swirling that yet another delay is in the cards after the film failed to show up at CinemaCon 2021.
Of course this big gamble would be surfacing during a huge event in Las Vegas, and according to Vulture’s unnamed sources close to Sony, that’s exactly what’s happening. Allegedly, there was no new Venom: Let There Be Carnage footage because the rumors state that Sony’s going to be shuffling its schedule yet again. If these reports are to be believed, director Andy Serkis’s big follow-up to the Tom Hardy led vehicle is setting its sights on January 21, 2022 as its new home on the calendar. Which automatically triggers another shift in plans, as Jared Leto’s own MCU-adjacent project, Morbius, is currently set to debut on that very day.
It does feel a bit weird that Venom: Let There Be Carnage would only be present as a sort of footnote during Sony’s CinemaCon presentation. As CinemaBlend has people on hand to cover the event, it can be confirmed that the movie was part of a general footage reel for Sony. However, it wasn't broken out into a separate moment in the showcase. Other than this particular rumor, the studio’s presentation was a pretty rousing success, as projects like Bullet Train were unveiled to the public in exclusive sizzle reels. Then, of course, there was the twin gifts of the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home and a surprise screening of the entirety of Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
If Venom: Let There Be Carnage was to be delayed again, one would assume those films would have some rumors swirling about them as well. But so far, it’s only Tom Hardy’s symbiote saga that’s at the eye of this hurricane. Though it should also be noted that Morbius was also not presented outside of the same clip reel that showed the only glimpse of Venom 2 that con-goers would be allowed to feast their eyes upon. So there may be more than meets the eye to these alleged shake ups.
As of this moment, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is still set to debut on October 15, 2021. Morbius is also similarly unmoved, in its January 21, 2022 date, ready to potentially drain the blood of its enemies at a theater near you in the new year. But, of course, this could all change at the drop of a spider mask, so we’ll keep our ears open for updates as they progress.
