Godzilla Vs. Kong Writer Has A Killer Idea For The Next MonsterVerse Movie

Fans of the MonsterVerse or even just kaiju in general will always tell you that they watch these kinds of movies for The Monsters, not the human characters. In fact, the only purpose we really see in the human characters is often for them to get squished or eaten by the monsters in question that we paid to see. Well, the Godzilla Vs. Kong writer has a killer idea for the next MonsterVerse movie, whenever that may be.

Interestingly, Godzilla Vs. Kong is one of the least egregious offenders when it comes to giving humans way too much screentime. 2014’s Godzilla felt more like Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen featuring Godzilla. And Godzilla: King of the Monsters, had, in my mind anyway, much the same problem—too much human drama. But in a recent interview with Slashfilm, MonsterVerse writer Max Borenstein says that he would absolutely love to see an upcoming MonsterVerse movie with no humans whatsoever. Here are his feelings on such a film:

Given the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, I’m kind of hoping in whatever the next phase Legendary decides to do that we would see that. I think it’d be pretty cool. I think it is possible. It would be very ambitious. I think ambitious in that Mad Max: Fury Road way. I think it’s totally possible to do that with the absolute minimum amount of human characters and really characterize the creatures.

Can I get an Amen? Now, as cool as this sounds, I honestly couldn’t even envision a kaiju movie without human characters or even "the absolute minimum" of human characters. In my opinion, the human characters have arguably been pretty lousy in the MonsterVerse movies. Well, except for in Kong: Skull Island where they gave a stronger impression. But the ideas of humans having to actually deal with these massive monsters is a huge part of these movies that date all the way back to the original King Kong in 1933.

I mean, would the original Godzilla be as effective if it didn’t show the reactions from the people who actually witnessed and experienced Godzilla’s destruction? Would Godzilla Vs. Kong even be as good if we didn’t see the little girl who loved King Kong in that movie? Yes, I’ll watch something like the recent Godzilla: Singular Point and be thinking, 'Oh, my God, can we just get rid of these human characters already?' But at the same time, when the characters are actually interesting, like they were in Kong: Skull Island, I actually love their presence and want more of them.

I guess what I’m trying to say is this: I don’t necessarily want to see an upcoming MonsterVerse movie with no human characters whatsoever. Like, have you ever seen Godzilla Vs Gigan where Godzilla talks? That’s something that I never want to see ever again. But what I do want is for the human characters to be interesting enough that I actually give a damn about them. Is that really so hard to do? It’s been done before in other MonsterVerse movies (Again: See Kong: Skull Island), so why not in the next MonsterVerse flick? But what do you think? Would you like to see the next MonsterVerse movie have no humans at all and just be all-out monster destruction? Sound off in the poll below.
