It’s fair to say Matt Damon is a Hollywood legend at this point in his career, as he’s given a number of memorable performances. Unrecognized genius Will Hunting and amnesiac CIA assassin Jason Bourne are definitely great roles, yet some could argue that Damon’s brief turn in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok is just as significant. The Oscar winner briefly appeared as an actor portraying Tom Hiddleston’s Loki in a play, much to the delight of the disguised God of Mischief. Even with limited screen time, Damon nailed the part, and it would appear that Hiddleston, a massive Loki know-it-all, actually helped him out with the scene.

Tom Hiddleston has been portraying Loki for a decade now, so (next to Marvel’s Kevin Feige), he’d be the foremost authority on the character. So Matt Damon was wise enough to take some direction from the veteran Marvel Cinematic Universe actor. And based on Damon’s sentiments to ReelBlend co-host Kevin McCarthy, Hiddleston’s assistance was much appreciated:

Tom was great. We did that little fun scene in Ragnarok. Tom was there throwing lines at me, you know? Everyone, they were right off camera giving me suggestions of things to say, so it was definitely a group effort.

This story actually isn’t too surprising, especially after what we’ve learned about Tom Hiddleston’s work during the production of Loki. Hiddleston actually played a key role in helping co-star Owen Wilson get acquainted with the lead character and the MCU as a whole. In order to do this, Hiddleston held “Loki lectures” that provided comprehensive insight into the character. It was incredibly kind of Tom Hiddleston to lend his co-stars a hand, and it would seem that his help was merely a small gesture to help out colleagues. However, in the case of Matt Damon, Hiddleston did joke that he would like something in return -- a cameo as an alternative Jason Bourne in a future film. I mean, I wouldn’t mind seeing that.

But the fact that Matt Damon was even tapped to play a faux Loki in the first place is truly a testament to the staying power of the character. The God of Mischief has certainly come a long way, as I don’t think anyone could’ve imagined that he would headline his own TV series at some point. The character has limitless potential, and it’ll be intriguing to see where he goes in the second season of his series and beyond.

Reports currently point to Matt Damon reprising his fake Loki role in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder. Tom Hiddleston doesn’t appear to be involved with the movie, but one would imagine that Damon kept his colleague’s suggestions close while working on the new movie.

Matt Damon’s Loki returns to the big screen when Thor: Love and Thunder opens on May 6, 2022.
