The DC Extended Universe has been consistently expanding over the past few years, to the delight of the fandom. A number of future projects will incorporate characters from Batman lore, including the developing Batgirl movie. In The Heights star Leslie Grace was announced to be playing protagonist Barbara Gordon, and reacted to the potentially career-changing news.

Leslie Grace was an established recording artist before making her movie debut as Nina in the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical In the Heights. Now Grace has beat out the competition to play the title character of Batgirl, and responded to the news on social media with:

And just like that, a new DC superhero was born. While there have been a few versions of Barbara Gordon over the years, this will mark the first time Batgirl is starring in her own live-action blockbuster. Leslie Grace has the responsibility of bringing that beloved Batman protegee to life, and she seems ready to put all of herself into the role.

The above message comes to us from Leslie Grace’s official Twitter account. It seems that the singer-actor’s career is skyrocketing at the moment, as her acclaimed performance in In the Heights arrived just a few months ago. And while she played an important role in that ensemble, Batgirl will find Grace at the top of the call sheet.

Information about Batgirl is limited, but it’s clear that Warner Bros. is moving forward with the movie’s development. The project will be helmed by Bad Boys for Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. There were also reports that the project was being developed specifically for HBO Max, but we’ll have to wait and see if it ends up on the big screen.

With the DCEU’s official Barbara Gordon found, it should be interesting to see how the cast of Batgirl ultimately comes together. What’s more, fans are wondering if the developing movie will be part of DC’s main timeline, or set in an alternate one like Joker and Matt ReevesThe Batman.

The Batgirl movie has already been a long time coming. The project was originally being developed by Joss Whedon, who eventually departed after struggling with its story. But now that new filmmakers and a cast are being brought together, the upcoming DC flick has never felt more real.

The next installment of the DCEU is The Suicide Squad on August 6th. In the meantime, check out the 2021 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
