Fans of the long-running The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series have been through a lot. We’ve been through serious horror movies (like the original) to silly movies (like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2) to something in-between, like 2013’s Texas Chainsaw 3D. Well, that film’s star, Alexandra Daddario, recently reminisced about the movie and had a take on one Texas Chainsaw 3D line she tried to get cut.
Some context: Very much like the 2018 Halloween movie from Blumhouse ignored every Halloween movie that came after the original, Texas Chainsaw 3D was attempting do the same thing all the way back in 2013. Unfortunately, Texas Chainsaw 3D, while financially successful, didn’t do as good of a job at breathing new life into the franchise. So, instead of getting a direct sequel like Halloween did with the upcoming Halloween Kills, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series did yet another prequel with Leatherface back in 2017.
Some might conclude that it could have been the slightly sillier tone of Texas Chainsaw 3D that hampered its transition as the new timeline for the series. In truth, some of the events and lines from that film were a bit much. In an interview with Collider, Alexandra Daddario had this to say about one of the most cringe-worthy lines in the movie:
I wanted to cut the line, ‘Do your thing, cuz.’ Do you remember that line where I say, ‘Do your thing, cuz,’ and then throw him the chainsaw? And the producer was like, ‘This is the movie,’ you know? And so I think that that’s just what the movie is. It’s supposed to be silly and the audience is supposed to laugh and be scared and whatever. But when you ask why, there’s plenty of movies that I don’t know why! Maybe no one knows what they’re doing. I have no idea!
If you’ve never seen the scene in question, it's available online. Basically though, in this moment, we see that Leatherface has become more of an antihero rather than a straight-up villain, and Alexandra Daddario’s character is helping him out by tossing him his trademark chainsaw.
Now, though Alexandra Daddario didn't dig it, I actually don’t mind this line. Texas Chainsaw 3D is kind of a silly movie. But so what? Yes, the original, 1974 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre by Tobe Hooper was a pretty hardcore horror flick. But its sequel, 1986’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, which was also directed by Hooper, was a borderline comedy, with a poster that even parodied The Breakfast Club.
So, in that way, silliness kind of runs in the franchise. Still and all, the Die In A Gunfight star didn’t seem to regret her role in Texas Chainsaw 3D, even despite that cringe-y line. In the same interview, she had this to say about the movie overall:
It’s supposed to be fun. I’m very grateful to have been in it.
On that level, the film succeeds. Personally, I wish the studios hadn’t just tried to eliminate the other movies from the timeline, since I love The Chainsaw Massacre 2. I love Leatherface: The Chainsaw Massacre III. I love Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, which stars two (Not one, but TWO) Academy Award winners in Renee Zellweger and Matthew McConaughey! I even kind of like the 2003 remake. So, I wish the series didn’t try to course correct itself, but oh, well. What's done is done. And who knows, maybe this next reboot will be the one that revitalizes the series. But what do you think?
