As the Marvel Cinematic Universe gets back in the swing of things with the release of Black Widow and a massive lineup in the next few months alone, a lot of our favorite characters will be getting a comeback. Among them is Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers in The Marvels, which will be a Captain Marvel sequel co-starring the stars of two Marvel shows on Disney+. Ahead of the movie getting to work, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has an intriguing tease for her movie.

Nia DaCosta is currently promoting her second feature film, Candyman, which continues the story of a bloody urban legend plaguing Chicago’s Cabrini-Green housing projects. Her directorial debut was 2018’s Little Woods, a North Dakota-set drama that shed light on the pitfalls of the American healthcare system. It may be safe to say that DaCosta is working with a much lighter topic with The Marvels, but check out how she described it:

It's a lot less traumatizing to work on for sure. But this movie also deals with specific, personal, sometimes sad things. But no, it's been nice to work in a different world for sure.

Nia DaCosta is stepping out of the drama to direct the Captain Marvel sequel, which will bring together Carol Danvers with Teyonah Parris’ adult Monica Rambeau after the latter acquired powers in WandaVision. The Marvels will also feature Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, who is set to be introduced in the Disney+ series, Ms. Marvel. The production will be the independent filmmaker’s most high-profile movie yet, but she sounds confident, per these words to EW:

It's amazing. [It's] more [freedom] than I've had on anything. It's great because we're all just comic-book nerds who want to make a great comic-book movie.

We have a bit of a long way to go before we can see The Marvels go higher, further and faster than the 2019 origin movie set in the ‘90s. Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and the rest of the production is currently preparing to get shooting on the movie ahead of its late 2022 release date.

The Captain Marvel sequel is eighth in line within MCU’s Phase Four, which also includes standalone sequels for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Black Panther world. There will also be new characters introduced soon with September’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, this November’s Eternals and later reintroductions for Fantastic Four and X-Men.

Nia DaCosta hinted at an emotional film from her and Marvel as The Marvels moves through its early development. We’d certainly imagine Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau reuniting will be a major element of this, especially following Maria Rambeau passing away from cancer in the years between the Snap and Blip, when Monica was dusted. Mark your calendars for The Marvels for November 11, 2022 and check out what movies are coming our way this year here on CinemaBlend, including Candyman.
