While comic book movies have become commonplace over the past decade of filmmaking, certain heroes stand out among the rest. DC’s Batman is a prime example, and The Dark Knight will once again be adapted for film thanks to Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Colin Farrell is playing Penguin in the mysterious blockbuster, and his reaction to Robert Pattinson getting COVID in the midst of filming is truly all of us.
The Batman was one of countless movie projects that was in the midst of filming when sets around the world were shut down last year. Production hit another major setback when Robert Pattinson himself reportedly came down with COVID-19. Colin Farrell recently shared what it was like working on set when that moment occurred, saying:
The hours the man [Matt Reeves] worked. Obviously, Covid began to grip the world while we were shooting. I left London in March then we were down four or five months and we went back. Then obviously Robert got sick and that was like, ‘Fucking Batman has COVID?’ Batman has COVID, that was just like, ‘fuck.’ But we finished it after I think they were probably from first turnover to last they were probably 12 or 14 months, the shoot. He’s cutting it together now, I haven’t heard sight or sound of him, I don’t know what he’s up to but I know he’s deep into it.
Celebrities, they’re just like us. And while the public was shocked to learn Robert Pattinson had contracted the virus so shortly after The Batman resumed filming, one can only imagine the stress everyone was under on set. Colin Farrell certainly didn’t hold his tongue regarding his personal response.
Colin Farrell’s comments come from his recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. While being careful not to reveal too much about The Batman, he did peel back the curtain on what it was like filming during this unprecedented time. Robert Pattinson’s health issues during filming were worrying for the actor himself, and also presumably put the movie’s schedule back into chaos.

Luckily for everyone involved, Robert Pattinson was able to recover from COVID and continue filming his dual role in The Batman. Anticipation for Matt Reeves’ blockbuster has been steadily rising since a sizzle reel of tantalizing footage was revealed that summer. In the same interview Colin Farrell opened up about Reeves’ vision and the current status of the project. In his words,
Of course, as we know, it’s such a jaded thing to say but it’s true: unless there’s some kind of emotional heft at the core of these things it doesn’t matter how much detail is created. … And he has it all, Matt. He’s brilliant. He’s driven, fuck he is so driven. And I think I get the sense that he of course understands but really steps into and inhabits the responsibility that he has with a mythology that is as loved and is as important to as many people as the world of Batman is. He stepped into that and he inhabited it fully, just an insane engine as well.
The Batman’s plot is still being kept under wraps, so these comments by Colin Farrell are sure to turn a few heads. I’m especially curious about the emotional story that Farrell referenced. Robert Pattinson’s version of Bruce Wayne will be relatively new to his crime fighting career, which should definitely add some stakes. Add in the moody visual language teased in the first footage, and it looks like Matt Reeves has a unique take on the DC hero.
