Disney has always been known for its animated blockbuster, which help define the pop culture landscape for generations of kids. And for the past few years, the title on everyone's lips have been Frozen. Anna and Elsa's journey toward sisterhood resonated with audiences of all ages, and inspired countless sing-a-longs and Halloween costumes in the process. Josh Gad became a household name for voicing Olaf, but he had an embarrassing encounter with some kids that left them weirded out.
Josh Gad's Olaf is the undisputed scene stealer of the Frozen franchise, including the record winning sequel that's in theaters now. But while countless moviegoers know his voice, they might not be able to pick out the Tony-nominated actor in a police lineup. That's exactly what happened when Gad once tried to serenade a family that was listening to his signature track "In Summer."As he tells it,
After the film came out, there was a minivan driving by and they were listening and blasting ‘In Summer’ in the car. And I was driving right next to them. I was with somebody and they’re like, ‘You’d blow their minds, you should blow their minds.’ So, I rolled down my window to wave to the kids and literally the parents start rolling up the window at me because they had no idea who I was. And I was like, ‘No, no I’m [Olaf].’ And they start literally to drive faster and get away from me.
Well, that's amazing. While Josh Gad wanted to make some kids' days by having the real Olaf sing his famous song from Frozen, he ended up causing some terror. Because instead, they just got a stranger crooning at them from another car.
Josh Gad's comments to Reelblend co-host Jake Hamilton help peel back the curtain to the less glamorous side of fame. Because while Josh Gad's name will be synonymous with his role in Frozen for years to come, not every minivan will be full of people who recognize his face. And as such, he should probably keep his sing-a-long's scheduled in the future.
Frozen is currently available to stream on Disney+, complete with Olaf's song "In Summer." You can use this link for a free 7-day trial to the streaming service.
It's heartwarming to see how excited Josh Gad was once Frozen became a hit, and that he wanted to surprise some young fans with meeting the real-life Olaf. Gad has a particularly unique speaking and singing voice, so it's one that could be easily recognizable. And while it isn't easy for Gad to get back into character as the talking snowman, he's managed to play Olaf in two movie and two shorts.
