Wow, The Inside Of Spider-Man’s Mask Is Wild

Spider-Man in Homecoming

It’s not exaggerating to say that Spider-Man is one of the most recognizable superheroes in pop culture, and much of that is because of his cool-looking mask. Those distinctive wide eyes and the web-pattern that extend to his entire costume make for an incredibly unique appearance, but have you ever wondered what the mask looks like on the inside. Well, wonder no longer!

Ryan Meinerding, Marvel Studios’ Head of Visual Development, shared this freaky look at the inside of the mask from the Spider-Man: Homecoming suit, i.e. the first suit that Tony Stark designed for Peter Parker, which was introduced in Captain America: Civil War. As he noted in his post, Meinerding came up with this inside-out design for the scene when Peter Parker and his best friend Ned are hacking into the suit.

While you couldn’t really see the inside of the Spider-Man mask during the hacking scene, Ryan Meinerding also planned to show this design later during Spider-Man: Homecoming when the suit was shown to be damaged, as seen in a separate Instagram post. That didn’t end up in the movie, but at least now fans can rest easy knowing that the inside of the mask looks even wilder than the outside of it.

Given that the MCU’s version of Peter Peter relies on a a lot of technology provided directly from Tony Stark and/or Stark Enterprises, it makes sense that there would be a circuitry design on the inside, as opposed to just having a plain look. The mask may be easy to take on and off just like a normal cloth mask, but we’ve seen time and time again that it and the entire costume are capable of so much more. So the mask is allowed to look weird underneath.

I imagine the mask for the new red and black suit that Peter Parker creates in Spider-Man: Far From Home looks similarly underneath, because it’s also packed to the brim with advanced technology. Whether or not we’ll finally get to see the inside of the mask on the big screen when this version of Spider-Man returns in a couple years remains to be seen, but it is nice to learn that so much thought went into an area of the costume that would barely have been seen had things gone according to plan.

Of course, Spider-Man’s mask is no longer useful at keeping Peter Parker’s identity secret following the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Thanks to the doctored footage released by The Daily Bugle, not only does the world now know Peter and Spidey are one and the same, but they also think that he also murdered Mysterio and orchestrated the Elemental attack on London.

That sets the stage for Spider-Man’s next movie, which will remain set in the MCU now that Disney and Sony have reconciled. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but hopefully, the Web-Slinger will be able to keep relying on his advanced Spider-suit as he deals with whatever villains and obstacles come up this next time around.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will return to the big screen for his next standalone movie on July 16, 2021. Keep up to date on what else is coming up in the MCU with our Marvel movies guide.
