Billie Lourd Posts Musical Tribute To Carrie Fisher For Her Mother’s Birthday

It's hard to believe, but the legendary Carrie Fisher's death was already a number of years ago. The beloved actress and writer passed away in December of 2016, shortly after wrapping her role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The generations of fans haven't stopped mourning General Leia's real-life death, and have been especially cognizant of her daughter Billie Lourd's journey. Today would have marked Carrie Fisher's 63rd birthday, and her daughter posted a musical tribute to mark the occasion.

Billie Lourd has made a name for herself as an actress in American Horror Story and Booksmart, but her history and training is also in music. And when it came to celebrating her mother Carrie Fisher's birthday, Lourd went back to her roots to sing a cover of Tom Petty's "American Girl." Check it out below.

Wow, what a talent. Aside from being a great cover and showing of Billie Lourd's voice, she also gave it an emotional caption. And it's one that will likely touch the hearts of Fisher's many fans, as well as anyone out there who was been faced with a devastating loss.

Billie Lourd's video comes from her personal Instagram, which the actress/singer uses to communicate with the public. The video shows the American Horror Story actress in Carrie Fisher's personal bath tub. Lourd says the tub was one of her late mother's very favorite places, with "American Girl" being one of her favorite songs. The combination is a sweet tribute to Fisher's bombastic spirit. What's more, Lourd says she might have a Coca-Cola with her dinner, the late actress' signature drink.

She sounds great, and it should be interesting to see if Billie Lourd's career as a musician moves forward with her growing star power. The public has watched her develop as an actress, beginning with her brief role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And as her character Lieutenant Connix became a larger role, Lourd also booked some major gigs. That includes three seasons of American Horror Story... so far.

I'm eager to see how much Connix appears in J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, especially since it's a character he created. While Carrie Fisher's Leia will be brought back through unused footage from the previous two movies, Abrams had the chance to work with Lourd on Episode IX. And it wouldn't surprise me if a tribute to Leia came in the movie courtesy of her Resistance character.

While Star Wars: The Last Jedi made its way to theaters after Carrie Fisher's death, her role in the movie was filmed in its entirety. As such, The Rise of Skywalker will be the first movie filmed without having Fisher on set. It's currently unclear how Leia's story will continue on through previously unused footage, but it gives the character the chance to have a true ending, and be included in the final installment in the Skywalker Saga.

We'll be able to see both Billie Lourd and Carrie Fisher when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
