Keanu Reeves came back in a major way with 2014's John Wick, thus spawning one of the most unlikely action franchises of the current decade. The third installment, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, became one of the most critically acclaimed, as well as one of the most financially successful, entrees in the series yet. Therefore, it should come as no surprise to learn that John Wick: Chapter 4 is right around the corner — locked and loaded.
There are plans for a spin-off or two, as well as a video game, a television show prequel centered around The Continental Hotel and a possible Atomic Blonde crossover with Charlize Theron (as reported by ScreenRant), in addition to this new sequel. Therefore, fans shouldn't be missing out on any John Wick-related goodness in the years to come. For now, though, let's take a look at what we know about the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 4. Details are obviously limited, especially since it is not even in pre-production yet. But, we'll tell you everything we know about the exciting sequel, and why you should be thrilled for Wick's return.
When Will John Wick: Chapter 4 Be Released?
John Wick: Chapter 2 came out a little under three years after its original. Subsequently, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum was released a little over two years after its predecessor. Keeping in this tradition, it has been announced that John Wick fans won't have to wait terribly long before John Wick is back on the big screen. As it was reported by Variety, the newest John Wick movie is set to be released on May 21, 2021. That's almost exactly two years after the third movie, and that's very good news for action movie lovers. Particularly after the explosive cliffhanger at the end of the latest movie.
Who Is Directing John Wick: Chapter 4?
While it hasn't been confirmed at this time, there's very good reason to believe that director Chad Stahelski will return to helm the latest sequel. The former stuntman-turned-action filmmaker co-directed the original John Wick alongside an uncredited David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), and he took over solo directing duties for both John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.
There's little doubt that, when it comes time to shoot this newest installment, Stahelski will return to the director's chair. The blockbuster filmmaker noted in a Reddit AMA back in May that he would be involved with a fourth film should the third movie be successful. Clearly, that was the case here.
Who Will Star in John Wick: Chapter 4?
At the moment, nobody is officially confirmed to appear in John Wick: Chapter 4. It's still in the very, very early stages; they might not have anything resembling a finished script yet — let alone the casting deals sorted out. But it would hard to imagine a John Wick movie without Keanu Reeves. He echoed the statement made by director Chad Stahelski earlier in May when the veteran actor said that he would gladly be involved with a fourth John Wick movie if the third one was a hit. Thankfully, that was definitely the case. And, we can assume a few other familiar faces will return too.
Based on the final cliffhanger at the end of John Wick: Chapter 3, one could assume that Laurence Fishburne will be returning to work on the latest sequel. Similarly, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and possibly Halle Berry, John Leguizamo, Asia Kate Dillion, Jason Mantzoukas and Angelica Huston will make their returns to the franchise. But, at the moment, nobody is officially signed on to appear in the sequel, though that will likely change soon.
What Will John Wick: Chapter 4 Be Rated?
It should come as no surprise that John Wick: Chapter 4 will quite certainly be rated R. There is a very, very, very small chance that the currently-unmade movie might pull an Expendables 3 and release a PG-13 sequel, but it's highly doubtful. The John Wick franchise is known for its quick, cutting violence, and the third movie was easily the most grizzly and graphic sequel in the series to date. It would be shocking if they decided to make the next one anything but a hard R. After all, they gotta up the ante with each movie, and there's a good chance that the fourth film is gonna get very violent.
Will John Wick: Chapter 4 Be The Final Movie In The Series?
As mentioned earlier, John Wick became one of the most unlikely action movie franchises of the past few years. It has grown from a small $20 million action flick into one of the biggest, most expensive and elaborate cinematic franchises in Hollywood. Audiences are clearly hungry for more, and they are happy to know that John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming around the corner in just a little over a year.
How far will this franchise go, though? It's hard to say for sure, and director Chad Stahelski admits in an interview with Indiewire that he and Keanu Reeves plan each movie one step at a time, trying not to get ahead of themselves thinking about the future. But, it sounds like Stahelski has a pessimistic view when it comes to the future of the title character.
People ask me this all the time, am I ending the movie for a cliffhanger? Is there a number four it’s headed for? Keanu [Reeves] and I have never, from one to two, two to three, ever expected to do a sequel or a follow-up... John may survive all this shit, but at the end of it, there’s no happy ending. He’s got nowhere to go. Honestly, I challenge you right now, here’s a question to you: How do you fucking want me to end it? Do you think he’s going to ride off into the fucking sunset? He’s killed 300 fucking people and he’s just going to [walk away], everything’s okay? He’s just going to fall in love with a love interest? If you’re this fucking guy, if this guy really exist[ed], how is this guy’s day going to end? He’s fucked for the rest of his life. It’s just a matter of time.
While it's hard to know for sure whether or not John Wick: Chapter 4 will be the conclusive installment in the ever-growing action franchise, it doesn't sound like the filmmakers have any plans for giving this character any sense of peace throughout his extensive, ongoing troubles. He's a marked man, someone who has chosen a dangerous profession where you don't necessarily win or loose. Rather, you either live to see another day or die trying. It is not a happy life, and it doesn't sound like there is any sort of harmony to be found in John Wick's final moments — whenever those might arrive.
For now, however, Chad Stahelski, Keanu Reeves and everyone else will seemingly ride the train as far as it'll go — even if the end point is bleak. All that said, though, it sounds like Keanu Reeves is a lot more hopeful and optimistic about what might happen during John Wick's final sequence. It should also be noted that Stahelski said back in late 2018 that he would like to continue this series "indefinitely," so there are no plans to slow down.
Will John Wick: Chapter 4 Connect To Ballerina?
As mentioned earlier in this article, in addition to John Wick: Chapter 4, there are also plans to make a spin-off movie placed inside the John Wick universe titled Ballerina. The movie was initially announced back in July 2017, a few months after John Wick: Chapter Two stormed into theaters. At that time, there were only slow developments, but it jumped into action earlier this year when it was announced that Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free Or Die Hard) was attached to direct, along with Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski on-board as a producer and executive producer, respectively.
At the moment, we have more details about Ballerina than we do John Wick: Chapter 4. For instance, we know that it'll focus on a young woman who is raised to become an assassin, seeking the men who killed her family. And, it's set to be written by Shay Hatten, who was previously a writer's assistant for Team Downey. Unlike John Wick: Chapter 4, there is no publicly announced release date, so it is hard to know whether or not it's set to come out either before or after Chapter 4.
Nevertheless, if a director is attached and the pieces are starting to come together, it wouldn't be out of the question to see the spin-off movie in the next year or two. If that's the case, then we can probably expect at least a nod or two to either the upcoming John Wick movie in Ballerina, or for the story told in Ballerina to be referenced in John Wick: Chapter 4, particularly with Chapter 3 providing our introduction to this new spin-off film. Expect more details to follow.
John Wick (Keanu Reeves)
Born Jardani Jovonovich, John Wick, played by the one-and-only Keanu Reeves, is one of the most deadly and legendary assassins known to man in the world of the John Wick franchise. Once a U.S. Marine turned wealthy (and damn near untouchable) assassin, Wick opted out of the world of killing people for a living, until a couple of no-good punks invaded his house, stole his car and unjustly killed his dog. From there, Wick is out for vengeance. He will stop at nothing until everyone who did him wrong is killed. Wick tried to readjust to life on his own afterwards, but he's brought back into the field for a favor that needs repaying. Then, everything snowballed into anarchy as John is killing people left-and-right, trying to save his own life.
It's a franchise that refers back to some of Keanu Reeves' previous movies, as well as other action classics, and it is an exhilarating thrill ride of a franchise that should hopefully continue to provide no shortage of entertaining and incredible stunts and action sequences galore with the fourth installment. For now, though, this is all we know about John Wick: Chapter 4. Let us know if you're excited to see John live to fight another day in the comments.
