Whether you’re just a casual fan or a hardcore supporter of the Star Wars saga, you’ve probably read one specific term burning through every group chat, Twitter thread, or Instagram story you could think of: “Reylo”. The fan ship that sees Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren and Daisy Ridley’s Rey becoming a romantic pairing is something fans have wanted to become official canon for some time, and those folks have some good news headed their way.
As it turns out, Daisy Ridley herself has now confirmed that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will indeed address that pairing, as she spoke about it in a recent interview. More specifically, she said the following:
J.J. does deal with [it]. It’s a very complex issue. People talk about toxic relationships and whatever it is. It’s no joke and I think it’s dealt with really well because it’s not skimmed over.
Judging by the details that Daisy Ridley shared above, it doesn’t sound like everything is very rosy in terms of the condition of the “Reylo” relationship. Though seeing as Kylo Ren was pretty angry after Rey rejected his offer to team up and tear down the old guard together, one would expect as much.
Finally dealing with the one true pair that Star Wars fans have seemed to overwhelmingly support the formation of, co-writer/director J.J. Abrams is addressing an issue that’s been stirring the pot for fans since he revived the franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And with his temporary successor Rian Johnson certainly fueling those fires with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it feels like he’s picked the best time to finally let the fans know that he’s heard them in this particular respect.
However, it still has to be kind of weird for someone like Daisy Ridley to read all of these theories that she and Adam Driver’s integral Star Wars characters are going to hook up, right? Especially in the light of the fact that Ridley herself has gone on record as stating that she doesn’t particularly want to see these two get together in the end. Well, in further remarks to EW, she actually explained that she’s not put off by the Reylo bandwagon at all. Ridley continued to explain herself in these terms:
It does not bother me, people writing theories. It’s really fun hearing them. Plus, because I know what’s sort of going to happen, I think it’ll be really interesting to see people’s reaction to [the final film]. Obviously, there’s this whole Reylo thing and some people are very passionate about it, some aren’t.
A lot of fans are going to be debating whether or not Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker closes off the saga of the Skywalker family to their satisfaction when it’s finally unveiled in theaters. But now, there’s going to be that added degree of evaluation, as Reylo fans are going to analyze this next films’ events even closer now.
Though, as anyone who knows the internet will tell you, while J.J. Abrams may have the final say over canon, there’s no need to let the truth get in the way of a good story. We’ll see what’s what when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker draws the Skywalker Saga to a close, Reylo or no Reylo, on December 17th.
