Dolittle Trailer Reveals Robert Downey Jr.'s Follow-Up To Avengers: Endgame

Robert Downey Jr. in Dolittle trailer

Robert Downey Jr. found a new Avengers team, and they're almost as wild as the Guardians of the Galaxy. RDJ exited the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame, and he'll welcome 2020 with his follow-up movie, Dolittle. The Marvel hero stars as Dr. John Dolittle, the famous veterinarian who can communicate with animals. The fantasy movie was previously called The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, and features an all-star voice cast for the animals -- including an MCU reunion for RDJ and Tom Holland, who voices a dog named Jip. So, yes, Mr. Stark and Peter Parker will be reunited after all!

Dolittle just released its first trailer, one day after giving fans the official poster. Check out the trailer:

He's like Sherlock Holmes mixed with Captain Jack Sparrow and maybe some Willy Wonka.

Dolittle will be released in theaters this January. It features the "human" cast of Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, and Jim Broadbent. The animal voice cast includes Tom Holland, Selena Gomez, Ralph Fiennes, Rami Malek, Kumail Nanjiani, Emma Thompson, Octavia Spencer, and John Cena, because John Cena is literally everywhere lately. Seriously, look behind you.

Here's the official poster for Dolittle, shared on Saturday before Sunday's trailer drop:

According to Universal Pictures, Dolittle follows Dr. John Dolittle seven years after he lost his wife. The famed doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria’s England lives like a hermit behind the high walls of Dolittle Manor with only his menagerie of exotic animals for company. But when the young queen (Jessie Buckley, Wild Rose) falls gravely ill, a reluctant Dolittle is forced to set sail on an epic adventure to a mythical island in search of a cure, regaining his wit and courage as he crosses old adversaries and discovers wondrous creatures.

The doctor is joined on his quest by a young, self-appointed apprentice (Dunkirk’s Harry Collett) and a raucous coterie of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla (Rami Malek), an enthusiastic but bird-brained duck (Octavia Spencer), a bickering duo of a cynical ostrich (Kumail Nanjiani), an upbeat polar bear (John Cena,) and a headstrong parrot (Emma Thompson), who serves as Dolittle’s most trusted advisor and confidante.

Robert Downey Jr. was first announced for an adaptation of The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle in 2017. Dolittle -- directed by Stephen Gaghan (Syriana, Traffic) -- was going to be released in May 2019, then Universal moved it to early April to avoid competing with Avengers: Endgame. After that, the studio moved the film to January 17, 2020, where it is now.
