Not Even Tom Holland Knew About Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Big Post-Credits Twist

Spider-Man when his identity is revealed

Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ended in a big way with Spider-Man: Far From Home. Jon Watts' sequel revealed how Earth had moved on since Thanos' assault in the past two Avengers movies, while also moving Peter Parker's story forward in new and exciting ways. Aside from the return of J. Jonah Jameson, the blockbuster surprised audiences with bringing back Captain Marvel's Skrulls, with the real Nick Fury actually on an undisclosed cosmic location. It was a twist that fans didn't see coming, and it turns out that not even Tom Holland was cued into this post-credits scene.

Spider-Man: Far From Home's two credits scenes were doozies. And after J.K. Simmons' surprise appearance revealing Peter Parker's identity as the wall crawler, it was shown that Nick Fury and Maria Hill weren't actually in the movie, but were Talos and Soren in disguise. Franchise star Tom Holland was recently asked if he knew this was coming, to which the 23 year-old star said:

I'm trying to think if I did know that. No, I don't think I did know.

Marvel Studios is famous for its security, and that extends to the biggest stars in the shared universe. Although considering Tom Holland's relationship with spoilers, maybe this shouldn't come as a complete surprise to the general public.

Tom Holland's comments at ACE Comic Con (via Comic Book) shows how few people knew about The Skrulls' role in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Maria Hill actress Cobie Smulders previously revealed that she didn't know the truth about her character. In fact, unused footage from Avengers: Infinity War was used to bring she and Samuel L. Jackson's characters to life in that surprising way. But Tom Holland is also the protagonist of the Spider-Man franchise, so it would make sense if he got more secret information than everyone else.

Alas, that wasn't the case, at least according to the young actor himself. And he didn't really need to know about the Skrulls in order to do his job the blockbuster's set. Peter wasn't in the already iconic scene, one of the few sequences in Far From Home that didn't involve Spider-Man. Besides, Tom Holland is known as one of the MCU's worst actors when it comes to spoilers.

Although not as bad as Mark Ruffalo, Tom Holland has occasionally struggled with keeping the MCU's events under wraps. He was reportedly not given much of the script for Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, as The Russo Brothers didn't trust him the myriad secrets for those movie. What's more, Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch went viral for trying to stop Holland from revealing spoilers during the Infinity War press tour. Unfortunately, that didn't stop him from accidentally revealing that Peter turned to dust when he surprised fans ahead of the blockbuster's screening. Whoops.

It should be interesting to see what come next for Spider-Man, now that Sony and Marvel have reached a new agreement to keep the character in the MCU. Tom Holland will presumably jump between two different universes, also being used for Sony's burgeoning Spider-Verse. But we'll just have to wait and see what comes next as the plans for the future are revealed.

The next installment in the MCU is Black Widow on May 1st, 2020. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
