New Birds Of Prey Footage Reveals Harley At A Roller Derby

We have yet to get a full trailer for next year’s DC film Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), but that doesn’t mean we haven’t got a look at the movie. Earlier this month a theater-only teaser for the film released alongside IT Chapter Two. Now we have another look at the film thanks to some new footage that reveals Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn at a roller derby. Check out the image below:

Behind the scenes of Harley Quinn at a roller derby in Birds of Prey

This image comes from a video from WarnerMedia’s (the parent company of Warner Bros. and DC) YouTube page talking about the company’s Diversity and Inclusion Report. It may seem like an odd place to get a new look at Birds of Prey, but we’ll take whatever we can get. In the image you see Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan working with actress Margot Robbie, whose Harley Quinn is in full roller derby getup.

She’s got her pigtails going through her helmet and a great roller derby outfit for what is sure to be a really fun scene in the film. I imagine we can expect some of the fun and heart of Whip It with some of the ridiculousness of Rollerball in Birds of Prey.

Watching the slightly unhinged Harley wreck shop in a roller derby arena (bat in hand perhaps?) is exactly what you’d want and expect from a film that is said to be completely bonkers. Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead has said that the film is really weird and unlike any other comic book movie and judging by the first poster, that description seems apt.

In Suicide Squad Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn didn’t really adopt the full on clown attire seen when she first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series. Instead David Ayer’s film gave her an aesthetic more akin to her look in The New 52, following DC Comics’ relaunch of its line. After that, Harley Quinn got her own ongoing comic book series in 2013 where she was a part-time member on a roller derby team.

So there is precedent for Harley Quinn strapping on the roller skates in the comics and clearly Birds of Prey will be drawing from that as Margot Robbie’s character strikes out on her own after getting some friends and giving The Joker the boot. You can watch the video from WarnerMedia below.

We technically got a Birds of Prey teaser with the theatrical-only one released with IT Chapter Two, but with Birds of Prey set to release in February, it feels like we should expect a full trailer to be on the way. Hopefully it gives us a look at how well Harley Quinn plays with others in the roller derby arena.

Birds of Prey arrives in theaters on February 7. Check out our 2020 Release Schedule to see what other huge movies are headed our way next year.
