James Gunn Shares Photo With The Suicide Squad Cast

The DC live-action universe seems to have hit its stride over the past few years, following a bumpy start during its early days. Despite fan excitement and iconic characters, movies like Justice League and Suicide Squad failed to connect with audiences and fare well critically. The latter was directed by David Ayer, and had a ton of buzz surrounding the blockbuster due to its killer trailers. James Gunn will helm its upcoming sequel The Suicide Squad, and recently shared a photo with some of the cast.

News of James Gunn's upcoming DCEU debut blew the minds of the fans, as the filmmaker was previously synonymous with his work on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Moviegoers have been eagerly awaiting any information regarding the blockbuster's contents, and Gunn recently revealed the sequel's full cast list (although he didn't reveal their roles). Now he's posted a photo with some of those actors, check it out below.

Clearly development for The Suicide Squad is moving forward, and James Gunn is even meeting with the cast ahead of filming. Just what this meeting entailed is a mystery, but it's exciting to see so many of the recently announced actors in one place.

James Gunn shared this photo on his personal social media accounts, which the filmmaker regularly uses to directly communicate with the fandom. While the image isn't the full cast of The Suicide Squad, the above image is full of newcomers who will make their DC debut in the upcoming ensemble film. Firefly's Nathan Fillion is shown alongside Ant-Man's David Dastmalchian, Guardians of the Galaxy's Sean Gunn, Pitch Perfect's Flula Borg, Daniela Melchior, Mayling Ng, and Jennifer Holland.

These newcomers have mostly been cast in undisclosed roles, so we know just a few of the character that are making their debut in The Suicide Squad. David Dastmalchian is playing Abner Krill / Polka-Dot Man, while Daniela Melchior is playing Batman rogue The Ratcatcher. Other than that, all the actors show in James Gunn's picture are playing unknown characters in the DC blockbuster.

There are plenty of newcomers who weren't featured in this picture, including John Cena, Steve Agee, Doctor Who's Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson, Storm Reid, and Guardians/ Walking Dead standout Michael Rooker. Additionally, none of the returning actors are pictured. Just what James Gunn has in store is a mystery, but he's got some killer talent attached to The Suicide Squad.

It's exciting to see James Gunn feeling so free and comfortable on social media, as his Twitter account was the cause for his drama last year. When offensive jokes from a decade ago suddenly resurfaced, James Gunn was unceremoniously fired from his role in the MCU, specifically the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He was eventually reinstated months later, although the Guardians threequel was pushed back years due to the drama unfolding.

It during the interim months of James Gunn's Marvel firing where he eventually hopped over to the DC side of things, and signed on to bring The Suicide Squad to life. Fans are eager to see what he'll do with the titular team, after showing his skill at balancing a colorful ensemble of characters with Guardians. But the hard part is patiently waiting for updates from Gunn and company.

The Suicide Squad is currently set to arrive in theaters on August 6th, 2021. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
