Yes, Avengers: Endgame Is Still Making Big Money At The Box Office After Avatar Defeat

Avengers: Endgame battle shot led by Captain America Marvel Studios

Did you think Avengers: Endgame was done kicking ass? Just when you think its box office run is winding down, it just keeps going and going like an Energizer sweet rabbit. Endgame dethroned Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time over Comic-Con weekend July 20-21. A month and a half later, the money is still rolling in. The new amount to beat just keeps ticking up, and it'll certainly be tough for Avatar 2 -- or whoever -- to eventually top Endgame.

The worldwide total for 2009's Avatar is $2,789,679,794. Here are the current domestic/international and total worldwide numbers for 2019's Avengers: Endgame so far:

Avengers: Endgame (as of 9/2/19)Domestic: $858,345,838Foreign: $1,937,901,401Worldwide total: $2,796,247,239

Can't stop, won't stop. Avengers: Endgame came out in late April in markets around the world. It took less than three months for Endgame to top Avatar, although both titles used re-releases to get their current totals. Now Endgame is nearly $7 million ahead of Avatar, and still chugging along.

(These $$ amounts are not adjusted for inflation; when we adjust for ticket price inflation over the decades, the box office winners look very different.)

Avengers: Endgame is still playing at the domestic box office after almost 20 weeks. It just made $86,837 over the four-day Labor Day weekend, per Box Office Mojo. That not going to set any major records. But it's amazing that it's still even making that much. It just lost 5 domestic screens, putting it down to 110 domestic theaters. But it still got a box office boost of 72.7% across the four days, presumably from fans realizing this might be their last chance to see it on the big screen. You can already watch it at home, but it's not quite the same.

As Forbes noted, Avengers: Infinity War ended its domestic run on September 13, 2018, but it kept playing in foreign markets into 2019. That's expected to be the case for Avengers: Endgame as well. It is winding down on the domestic front -- losing more screens each time a big release comes out, like IT: Chapter 2 this weekend -- but international pennies should still keep coming in through early 2020.

So the final Avengers: Endgame tally probably won't be known until the new year. It's not going to be too much higher than the number above, but I suppose every dollar counts when you're setting a new record for someone to beat.

It's hard to imagine what movie will be able to top Avengers: Endgame. It might be something we have no idea about yet, happening another 10 years down the road. (Point to ponder: Will ticket prices be much higher 10 years from now, or possibly lower due to theaters facing strong competition from streamers? Discuss.)

Or the new champion could be one of James Cameron's many Avatar movies ahead. Cameron did have the top two movies with Avatar and Titanic, so the guy knows how to make a blockbuster. Don't count him out, whatever he has up his sleeve.
