Spider-Man: Far From Home Is Getting Re-Released With New Footage

Spider-Man and Zendaya in Far From Home

Spider-Man: Far From Home came out at the beginning of July, so by now it’s close wrapping up its theatrical run… or at least, that’s what we thought. Fresh off becoming not just the highest-grossing Spider-Man movie, but also Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing movie of all time (surpassing 2012’s Skyfall), the studio has announced it’s bringing an extended cut of Far From Home to theaters.

This version of Spider-Man: Far From Home is four minutes longer than the original theatrical cut thanks to a “never-before-seen action sequence.” It’s hitting the silver screen in the United States and Canada on Thursday, August 29, and will be available in IMAX and large formats in select locations.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is following in the footsteps of its Marvel Cinematic Universe predecessor Avengers: Endgame, which returned to theaters on June 28 with its own extra footage. That re-release led to Endgame ultimately toppling Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time by the time San Diego Comic-Con rolled around, and now Sony is looking to add more cash to the Far From Home pile.

As of this past Sunday, Spider-Man: Far From Home has made $1.109 billion worldwide, with $376 million of that coming domestically and the remaining $732.9 million common from international territories. It is worth noting though that on the domestic side of things, Far: From Home is actually ranked #2 among the Spider-Man movies, with 2002’s Spider-Man taking in over $403 million. Once you account for inflation, Far From Home moves down to fourth place and Spider-Man is still at the top with what is now over $626 million.

Since there’s no way Spider-Man: Far From Home is going to surpass the likes of Avengers: Endgame and Avatar, I suspect Sony is delivering this re-release so that the sequel can collect at least an extra $300 million, thus making it the most financially successful Spider-Man movie across the board. Well, until a third MCU-set Spider Man movies arrives and gives Far From Home a run for its money…. pun intended.

As for this mysterious action sequence that’ll entice people back to theaters, I’m guessing it’ll be when Peter Parker fought some armed criminals in a restaurant while wearing the Iron Spider suit. This scene was teased in one of the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailers, but according to Tom Holland, it was removed from the original theatrical cut because it slowed down the beginning of the movie. That wouldn’t be a concern for a re-release.

Set a little over half a year after the events of Avengers: Endgame, with the world still reeling from those who were dusted being brought back to life and Peter Parker still mourning the loss of his mentor, Tony Stark, Spider-Man: Far From Home sees the teen hero going on a school field trip to Europe, where he crosses paths with Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio, who initially presents himself as a heroic figure, but soon shows he’s just as villainous as his comic book counterpart.
