See Zack Snyder Surrounded By Skeletons Filming Army Of The Dead

What is dead may never die and thus talk of the fabled Snyder Cut of Justice League continues to rage on two years after that film’s release. But while the Snyder Cut persists in an undead state, Zack Snyder himself has moved on to something else that just won’t die: zombies. Take a look below to see Zack Snyder surrounded by skeletons while filming his new movie, Army of the Dead.

Some audiences may have loved his take on DC’s superheroes, but it’s cool to see Zack Snyder back in the action-horror realm, which is where he got his start with his feature directorial debut Dawn of the Dead. Zack Snyder looks to be very much in his element here, down in the trenches surrounded by skeletons as he figures out a shot for the film.

The director is in what appears to be a completely burnt out car with two extra crispy skeletons, which look to be of the truly dead variety. It looks pretty grim and gritty, even in the daylight, like something out of a Mad Max movie. That’s the kind of thing Zack Snyder excels at, and since this is one of the first looks we’ve had at Army of the Dead, it’s an awesome start.

Based on the premise of the film, which finds a group of mercenaries venturing into quarantined and zombie-infested Las Vegas to pull of a heist, I think we can guess that at least one of those mercenaries will need to take refuge inside the car at some point to plan out their next move. Presumably they can't just kill the Night King; that would be too easy.

As you can also see in this image from his Twitter account, Zack Snyder is clearly not a film evangelist the way some of his contemporaries are. The director captions his tweet with gratitude to Red Digital Cinema, the camera company whose cameras have been a big part of the digital revolution and whose products have been used on films like Mission: Impossible Fallout and the upcoming Rambo: Last Blood, as well as TV shows like Stranger Things and The Witcher.

Zack Snyder also includes a fun little detail about the custom camera Red built for Army of the Dead with the hashtag “8k.” That indicates that the camera is using one of Red’s 8K sensors, presumably the Monstro, and Army of the Dead is being shot in an ultra high resolution 8K format. So it should look pretty good, even though its destined for Netflix and not theaters and most modern televisions are only 4K.

Starring in Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead are Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Garret Dillahunt, Ana de la Reguera and Chris D’Elia.

Zack Snyder is hard at work but there is no release date for Army of the Dead just yet, so keep checking back with Netflix regarding when it will finally arrive. For movies headed for a theatrical release, check out our premiere guide.
