IT Chapter Two Director Andy Muschietti Will Take A Break Before Working On The Flash Movie

The Flash in Justice League

The horror genre has been in an epic renaissance over the past few years. Filmmakers have brought exciting and terrifying projects to theaters, resulting in box office and critical success. Director Andy Muschietti can attest to this, as he got his start helming 2013's Mama, before eventually landing the directing gig for IT and IT Chapter Two.

Plenty of horror directors have transitioned to bigger scale projects, with their vision translating to genres like comic book movies. James Wan had great success with Aquaman, and it seems that the DCEU is trying to strike gold twice by hiring Andy Muschietti to handle the long gestating Flash solo movie. DC fans are eager to see Ezra Miller's hero return to the silver screen, but it looks like the IT director will take a break before jumping into the DC shared universe. As he recently put it:

Oh, I can't really talk about that... yet. I really want to take a few months off after IT Chapter Two and then regroup.

While Andy Muschietti seems to committed to finally bring the Flash's solo flick to theaters, he's not rushing the movie into development. Instead, he'll allow himself some time off following IT Chapter 2's release, before diving into the DCEU.

Andy Muschietti's comments to Fandango might be disappointing for moviegoers, who are eager for more information regarding the DCEU's future. Zack Snyder's Justice League seemingly threw a wrench into the plans for the shared universe, as the film was a bomb with audiences and critics alike. Since then, we've seen Ben Affleck depart his role as Batman, with Henry Cavill's future as Superman unclear.

Warner Bros.' shared universe ultimately stepped away from crossover heavy movies and serialized storytelling, making way for director-driven projects like Shazam! and Aquaman. Wonder Woman 1984 will bring Gal Gadot's Diana Prince back to theaters, but nothing hopeful has come from the studio regarding the Flash solo movie.

The long developing movie for Ezra Miller's speedster hero has gone through a ton of directors over the years, with each exit further discouraging the fandom. Andy Muschietti is the whopping third filmmaker to sign on for the Flash movie, following the departure of Seth Grahame-Smith and Rick Famuyiwa. The movie also recently lost writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein after having creative differences about the movie's direction.

Luckily, it does seem like Andy Muschietti is passionate about his future blockbuster. If the Flash solo flick comes to fruition, it'll be the biggest project in the director's career thus far. And while it might be frustrating to wait a few more months before finding out any concrete information, perhaps his sabbatical will allow Muschietti to dive into the superhero genre with passion and focus.

IT Chapter Two will arrive in theaters on September 6, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
