Vanessa Kirby Shoots Down Catwoman Rumors, But She’s Interested

Vanessa Kirby in Hobbs & Shaw

The DC live-action universe has been picking up speed recently. Following the poor performance of Justice League, Warner Bros.' massive franchise has toned down crossovers to focus on character driven projects like Shazam! and Aquaman. It's a method that has allowed the DCEU to have an upswing, and there are some exciting projects coming down the pipe line, chief of which being Matt Reeves' The Batman.

The Batman solo movie has been a long time coming, and Matt Reeves and company have kept quiet regarding what to expect from the developing project. But the first casting announcement was recently made, as Robert Pattinson signed on to play the next Bruce Wayne. Fans are eager to learn more about the film's cast, and a new rumor indicated Hobbs & Shaw and The Crown standout Vanessa Kirby might be playing Catwoman. Unfortunately she recently shut that down, saying:

I don’t know anything about it. Are you kidding?! I would love to be Catwoman. Oh my god, it would be a dream.

Well, that seems pretty cut and dry. It seems that Vanessa Kirby hasn't been approached to play the next live-action Selena Kyle in The Batman. But that doesn't mean she's disinterested, as she described the feline vigilante as a dream role.

Vanessa Kirby has made quite a name for herself in the action world recently, so she would probably make a killer Catwoman in The Batman. The first got her hands dirty playing opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Fallout. And her next movie will once again put her back into the fray, as she plays Hattie Shaw in the Fast and Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw. The trailers from the movie show Kirby shooting, driving, and stunting through the upcoming blockbuster. As such, she seems ready to jump into Catwoman's signature costume for DC.

In her same conversation with ET Online, Vanessa Kirby revealed how surprising her new career in the action genre has been. As she put it:

I just never thought in a million years I would be an action girl because I'm just not naturally like that at all. But yeah, there is something about this particularly that made me-- I really felt like it was such a good opportunity to take care of this female character in this massively male world and to make sure, every day, we made sure in every area, she was a capable fighter. That she had all the best fights… That she was never saved by the guys… And I hope it instills some kind of change.

Hattie Shaw certainly seems like a great jumping off point for Vanessa Kirby to transform into Selena Kyle, if conversations with Warner Bros. ever end up happening. The Batman seems like a logical place to bring Catwoman into the DCEU, as the solo flick has been rumored to heavily feature Batman's rogues gallery.

Bruce Wayne's unique relationship with Selena Kyle has been played out a few other times on the big screen, so it should be interesting to see what Matt Reeves does with that dynamic if Catwoman ends up in his upcoming DC movie.

You can catch Vanessa Kirby in Hobbs & Shaw on August 2nd. Matt Reeves' The Batman is currently set to arrive in theaters on June 25th, 2021. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
